Just got my bike running great this past week and took a 600 mile trip on it with no problems. Today riding to work cruising in 2nd went to turn left downshifted to 1st and rear tire locked down. So I shut bike off and tried rocking and tapping shift lever to get to nuetral but it wouldnt budge. Bike would not roll even with clutch pulled in. only one out of ten local shops would touch it not even harley of course. The shop managed to get it into nuetral and rolling but now it wont go into any gear just grinds. Clutch feels normal suggestions? Will not go into gear with engine off either.

They must not need the work, these trans. aren't that bad to work on. [confused] I'd hunt me another shop or start tearing into the Primary myself.

I found one shop that would work on it but 2 week wait. Its there now im debating having them pull engine and send It to nhrs for a trans and engine build.

About all I can offer is a service manual you can download and a Parts manual for an '03 (they've not changed much Trans. wise) Without being there and hearing/seeing what's going on, that's about the extent I can do. Post back up if you decide to give it a go yourself and I'll help where I can with the proper manuals and such.

Standard tools up until you get the primary cover off - from there it depends on what you find. Service manual list tools as well.

Check the outer parts of the Primary first to see if the Chain has too much slack OR the Clutch basket Bearings need replaced. The Ramp assembly might have cracked where the balls (3)of them rotate when the clutch lever is pulled in.
Pull off the Transmission cover after Draining and check each area the outer areas before you pull it all down. Put the Rear of the Bike on the stand and once Cover is removed you can put a lock on the front Rotor, for safety.
Now start the bike LEAVE her in[Neutral] put the foot shifter back on with the Whole Outer parts of Tranny Exposed try to roll the rear wheel manually first and watch what is going on.No reving of the Engine. Now Unless you have been downshifting without pulling the Lever and Speed shifting going up in gears these Transmissions can't really take that kind of crunching too long. I hope it's just the outer parts area. If not I would reman the whole tranny gears the bearings and all just ot get it out of the way.If you don't have a Stand-Cycle Gear has a sale going on nearly half price for a couple of days. Post up when you can.*Jimi

Ok thx for the info I dont drive the bike hard at all and I always rev match rps on downshift abd use the clutch. Ill let you know what the shop says I dont have time to work on it myself or I would. Thx guys!

Shop called today said that everthing behind primary is in great shape and they are pulling engine and splitting the case thursday. Labor is going to be around 700 plus parts im having all the crank and rod bearings replaced as well. Hopefully it will be like new afterwards.

Finally got the word today, shift drum worn badly and.2 really worn shift forks everything else looks great. Going to put xb9 pistons in the engine for some extra compression. Thx!

Update!!! So after the shop having my bike for 37 days they finally called to tell me it was all back together but not shifting correctly. The tech said it overly hard to shift gears probably something mis aligned. So now I have to go a few more weeks without my bike...should have bit the bullit and taken it 120 miles to the harley dealer that would have fixed it.[mad]

Did you ever manage to get your bike back? And if you did, what did the techs have to swap out/how much did it cost you?

Reason I ask is because I had shifting issues, which led to me splitting the engine and replacing a cracked gear, bent shifting fork and rod. (Still trying to get engine halves back together, with no luck).
