Ok, I know I need to change-
Primary Fluid and Filter
Trans Fluid
Fork Fluid

on a 2005 XB9R.

How much would this run me if i did it myself, or took it to a dealer?

The motor and tranny oil is simple to do yourself. Fork oil is a little more complex. If you had the correct tool (Syringe and depth gauge about $20) you could do it on the cheap and save a trip to the dealer. Tons of oil threads on this site and you can also down load the shop manual from here and it will tell you step by step how to perform these tasks.

Do the Oil and Filter change yourself, and if you're mechanically inclined do the forks.

If not they usually run around $200. I'd suggest getting the bushings, seals, and O-rings from ASB and give them to the shop.

And ALWAYS ask them to keep the old parts so you can see them. That way you know without a doubt that they changed out the parts. I've noticed a lot of shady **** with dealers around here.

i am scare to bring my bike to a dealer to have my bike work on, they are not too friendly and has a lot of negative feedback.

Im about to have to get this done too... In the next few weeks or so... Changing the oil is cake, you can do that easy. As for the fork stuff, Im not risking messing something up.

If you know a good bike shop they could do that stuff cheaper then the dealer. I'd imagine it only being an hour, or hour & half job.

H-D badged and approved XB oil filter-$19.99 plus tax.
2007 and up Toyota Yaris(1.5 liter)oil filter at Walmart made by purolator and house branded as SuperTech-$2.97. fits all XB's. i just saved you enough right there to buy your 2.5 quarts of motor oil. LOL
do it yourself!

The 10,000mi service is very "do-it yourself-able"
Here's some tips I've learned:
-Don't skimp on oil. A hot running air cooled Buell is tough on oil. Synthetics are BY FAR the best option for an XB. Motorcycle specific oil is NOT necessary, especially on a Buell with separte oils for engine/transmission. Get a good quality 20w50 or 15w50 (Mobile 1) and be done with it. With the cooler weather setting in you could run Rotella 15w40 as well. It's a very good oil and the price is very reasonable. I use the 5w40 Syn Rotella in my Busa and have used it in a nember of bike before.

-The "official HD" oil filter is not necessary. There are plenty of very good quality filters available for 1/2 the price. Stay FAR FAR away from Fram filters though. I've cut a few open and you would not believe the cheap crap they build them out of.

-For the primary I liked synthetic 20w50 motorcycle oil (Lucas, if you must know). Seeing as how it only takes 1 qt you're not going to save very much by filling it with something cheap. The HD "sportrans" fluid works well too. My local dealer had it on sale for $6/qt a while back. For that price it's well worth using. Might be worth checking the dealer to see if maybe they have it on sale.

-Don't forget to check your primary chain tension. It's part of the 10,000mi service and it can have a HUGE impact on how your tranny shifts and feels. It's a very simple procedure so just download the service manual from this site and follow the directions.

-Primary oil level is CRITICAL for a smooth shifting tranny. Don't just dump a whole qt. in there and call it good. Download the manual and fill as directed.

A dealer will rape you for this service, count on it. With shop labor running between $50-100/hr + their crazy parts markup I'd be suprised if you could get out of there for less than $300. If you were anywhere near me I'd do it for you for a fraction of that. I rather enjoy work like this.:D
