1125R rear brake pads - clip?

Looking for some help. I haven't got a 1125R, but a looking to buy some decent replacement pads as a gift for a pal who has (2008). Fronts no problem. On the rears, I've found some different grades, most with the clip on the rear, but the ferodo's without. Before spending the cash, can anyone tell me if that retention clip is necessary for operation and therefore I'd be wasting my money on the ferodos? Thanks
