Hello!

I just got my bike back together after an engine ring job/top end and put about 500 miles on the bike without a flaw. Riding the bike a few weeks ago I come to a light and go to downshift into first gear and the bike won't shift past neutral, feels like something is stuck in the shift mechanism. Well I drive on in second and decide to try for first again and then I can't get any gear. The bike is stuck in neutral and won't engage in any gears. I got the bike home and popped the primary cover off and everything is in place and the shifter is free moving but the bike will not shift out of neutral. I cleaned the clutch with alcohol and put everything back together and the damn thing still won't engage in any gear. I have adjusted the clutch/primary but nothing seem to get the bike to work.

Any help or suggestions are appreciated, I'm not looking forward to splitting the cases if I have to.

Thanks again!

I just had this similar issue with an 05. Would only engage 1st & neutral. Hoping it would be an easy fix I removed the primary cover & checked the shift pawl adjustment. Jack the rear wheel off the ground & rock it back & forth to go thru the gears. I replaced the pawl & detent plate ($53)but it made no difference. Had to split the cases. The 1st/3rd gear shift fork was seized to the shift drum & when I got it free found it had some nasty score marks where some matter had got in there, probably from new assembly. Apart from some bronze filing dust I didn't find the actual metal culprit that caused it, nothing in the bottom of the case & nothing stuck to the drain plug (someone had changed the fluid before I got it so there may have been some evidence then) but there's always bits of metal on the plug from the chain. Anyway had to change 1st/3rd & 3rd/5th shift forks($64 each).
Despite what others told me (engine has to come out to do this) I did manage to split the cases & leave the right case in the frame. The crank assy & transmission comes out with the left case.
