I just bought a 04 XB12R last month with 4500 miles on it. It ran perfectly fine up until the other day when I went to start it in the morning and it turned on fine for a couple of seconds then the engine went idle and turned off. Went to try it again and did the same thing and has continuously done so. I know more about cars then I do bikes and wanted to know if it just might need a new battery or if its more of a problem. Thank you.

I had the same problem and the i switched the fuses with brand new ones and that fixed the problem. they did not look blown but that was the problem for me. i have a 2006 xb12s

doesn't sound like a battery problem, if it started. Does it have old gas? old plugs? Have you check air filter? these would be places to start.

I'd start with the battery. Connections, get it tested and all that... ....then I'd hook the bike up to ECMspy to see what's going on with the brains of the machine. Check for codes and a good TPS signal. If you're not getting a TPS signal then you're not going to get the thing to turn over. Just my 2cents. AND something that I experienced. My TPS stopped working, totally out of the blue, a long time ago. It took me a while to realize that the lack of TPS signal on ECMspy ment I had a problem. The bad TPS didn't throw any codes. Once I realized that the TPS could be the problem, I replaced it and instantly got a signal. I reset the TPS and the bike fired right up.

I just bought a new battery. Hooked it up and the bike turned on just fine. I let it run for a good five minutes before riding it for a good 20 minutes (it rode fine) then turned it off. Went to restart it and the same problem happened again. I'm hoping that its something small like plugs or the filter because the closest place I can go to service it is about an hour and a half away meaning id have to tow it with a trailer (both of which i dont have).

Before you toss in the towel on your own ability to diagnose the problem try looking through a service manual to find a flow chart or something that can help direct you towards a solution. I think you're having some sort of charging issue. If it started and ran fine with a new, fully charged battery, but then exhibited the same symptoms after sitting for a bit. I'd think something is wrong with the stator or the voltage regulator. Look in a service manual how to diagnose those parts and you might find a solution.
BTW that's just my suggestion as to what I'd do. Others might chime in with something better.

Now the bike wont turn on at all meaning none of the lights on the dash come on or makes the noise when you put the power switch down. Im thinking that its electrical. Something must be draining the battery

zavs: before you haul the bike somewhere and spend upwards of $80 an hour to have it looked at....do the following with simple basic tools including a 10mm socket and a simple $15 volt meter.....as follows:
1-charge battery fully
2-remove negative cable from battery
3-set volt meter to DC amps and hook positive end to battery terminal and negative end to negative cable. now read meter. does it say anything more than 0.25 amps? if so you have a parasitic drain. if not continue to proceed
4-remove fusebox cover- check all fuses. check diode fuse. it has little arrow on it. is it pointing correct direction?
5-reconnect negative cable and turn on key...run switch off. do gauges sweep? turn on run switch. does fuel pump prime? if so it should start. if it does then set your volt meter to DC volts...NOT amps.....VOLTS. connect red voltmeter wire to positive batt cable and black volt meter wire to negative batt cable. rev bike to 3000 rpm. you should see between 13-2 and 14-2 volts DC. if so it is charging. if not it is not.
do the above and report back.

im having problems with 2004 xb12r . I change the intake seals because the were leaking. put everything together and did a TPS reset. set it to 5.5. the roll over and fire but would not stay stared longer than 3-5 seconds. I change Tps for a new one, did the reset and its the same thing. can anyone help.

What did you take apart in replacing the seals? Did the bike run before doing this? Look at what has changed, retrace your steps if you can, take your time. You may have missed something in the reassembly.
