Hey guys, I got a 2007 xb12r with only 900 miles, about a week ago. I'm pretty sure my voltage regulator is bad.

I have 2 questions:
1) Will the regulator work for me, buellster says its for 2003 - 2005 models only http://www.buellsterparts.com/product.sc?productId=1026

2) Will any of these regulators work on a 07 xb12r. I'd like to upgrade if it will save me trouble in the long run.

Here's the troubleshooting I've done to get to this point:
-Bought new battery
-Checked voltage with bike off (~12.3)
-Voltage with bike on (~11.7) So, something is keeping the battery from charging....

-checked 30 amp fuse - looks good
-checked the 77 connector - looks good, but I'm planning to replace it anyways
-checked stator (leads to ground, and 1-2, 1-3, 2-3) with bike off - all good
-check stator amps with bike on ~17 amps at idle and higher if I give it throttle So, I think the stator is fine.

These forums are awesome. I didn't know a thing about charging systems before yesterday. Thanks in advance for any help!!

I certainly don't know as much as a lot of members on this forum but I had charging issues with my 2003 Firebolt also. I don't recall the exact voltage output when running, but it was around 12 and just under 12. Revving it didn't make a big difference either. I bought a new voltage regulator from American Sport Bike and installed it - came with the updated connector - and as is well. I did update the connector first because it was cheaper to do that but it turned out that the VR was the culprit. I also read that another "test" you can do for your stator is to remove the inspection cover and take a good sniff. It should smell like oil not burnt popcorn. I don't think it's a substitute for the trouble shooting steps detailed in the service manual, but it's a quick and easy check. I haven't heard of roadstercycle, but I can say American Sport Bike has excellent customer service. It's a good idea to put some kind of voltage meter on the bike too. There's a bunch out there to pick from and they're simple to install. Good luck and nice to have you on board!

Thanks for the info. I really want to go with the mosfet regulator from roadstercycle, but I'm afraid it will be too difficult to mount. At least with the stock replacement it will be easy to bolt it on the bike.

Has anyone out there upgraded their voltage regulator?

After several emails back and forth with roadster, I decided to go with the stock replacement. The mosfet seems to be a superior regulator, but mounting it would require a little more effort than I want to put in. Another nice thing about it is that it does away with the 77 connector all together.

The mosfet can definitely be installed on the buell if you have time to do a little modification to where the old regulator mounted. The dimension of the mosfet are 4.75 x 3.5 including cable connectors and all.

Jack, with Roadster was super helpful and replied to all of my emails in <24 hrs. So check them out if you have a little time and want a new VR.
