I've spoken to one motorcycle shop and that's what they told me it would cost because the part of the swing arm needs to be removed and it would take a long time. They also had to call a Harley dealership to ask.

I've had two new tires with installation done for less and the last time I've replaced the original belt I know it was nowhere near that.

Is it reasonable or am I being unreasonable?

I was also told to ride safe, how!?:D

It's cheaper to buy the belt, a manual and do it your self. They're trying to shaft you.
It's easy.
Loosen rear shaft pinch bolt, loosen the rear shaft 15 turns, remove the idler pulley, remove the swing arm brace and remove the old belt. install new belt and reverse process. Follow all recommended torque spec's...
Easy money.

way too high, it is easy you can do it in less then 30min,and it is not hard to take the swing arm piece off

When he told me the price, it sounded more like a "We don't serve those kind here".

Well thanks guys. You've made me feel like I wasn't crazy when I heard that price quote.

raymend: if you have truck or little trailer bring the bike and new belt down here and i'll install it for you no charge. i'm in southern PA....amish country. OR...i can give you step by step simple instructions if you have tools and place to work on it.

Wow, thank you guys. I really and sincerely appreciate the help. I will try to contact a few more shops to see what they say. Most likely the mechanics who installed the previous belt will do it at an affordable price.

I whole-heartedly agree with all the above advice to change the belt yourself & save a bunch of money.

Having said that, I don't think the $400-500 you were quoted is unreasonable as far as HD shop rates go. I've seen how these places charge, not just the part you need & the labour to install it, but you'll also end up paying rediculous prices for all kinds of peripheral consumables & shop supplies too!

Paul is on Long Island, he can do it as well.

No need to trailer all the way down to PA/MD border lol tolls will probably add up near that shop quote lol

if your in ga bring it by my shop ill do it for ya free if you got the belt. im shocked

oh sorry not sure how i missed where you are the first time. its stupid simple you can do no probs

Raymend unless you really have NO time in your schedule to spare(we all know time is money), go here http://www.buellmods.com/downloads
and download manual. Read over how to replace the belt. Follow Dillingers instructions and feel the sense of satisfaction that comes from wrenching on your own bike!
Now, if you don't have the time and you DO have the money. Keep searching for a better price/rate. The one that started this thread seems a bit high.
Keep this in mind: a shop will probably charge you $200 for a belt and around $100 dollars for an hour of labor to remove the old one and replace with the new one. So, you're looking at around $300 bucks.
If you're lucky.
Good luck.
