55w HIDs too hot?

If you are talking about HIDs being hotter than the h3 bulbs? They shouldn't be, h3 heat the filament, and the HID is like a tazer. It's an arc from one pole to other. So it will produce heat but not like a bulb. I had some brighter h3's that heated the reflective coat off, and melted the opening of the housing. So I swapped the parts around from the high side to low, and low to high. They are just about the same. The only difference is low has a half spoon to block the center. Any way The HIDs are not hotter than h3s, the ballast is what gets warmed up. Only in the start to light HID, which doesn't pull as much power as your regular bulb, then less once it's on. Plus unless you touch the HID bulb you may never have to change it, the ballast is what wears out. The only thing you have to worry is getting the bulb completely in water, cause the bulb (HID) is not sealed on the end.

HID's put off some heat, I used to install tons of them for a custom car shop. We used Oracle stuff alot. They said on plastic lenses they did not recommend the 55s because the lens would in fact start to bulge. Plug in a standard halogen next to a HID, and run your hand by it. Theres a decent difference. And Twisted, your right the ballast can get very hot sometimes. I've had ballast melt the zip ties holding wires tide to them.

Another happy ddm 55watt owner, going on 2yrs and no issues.
My 2nd favorite mod I did to my bike, besides the ecm, since I tend to be riding home at midnight more than I'd like.

I've had my DDM tuning 55w 8k HID's on the bike for awhile now, no issues...

I have been contemplating putting a relay on the HID's, so far I've created two relay setups, but thus far haven't put either on the bike, the HID's are just hardwired on right now... no issues at all with them... The main reason I wanted to go with the relay is just safey, plus I have halos on the bike hard-wired to the high-beam switch, the draw from the high beams and the halos is a bit much if the bike isn't warmed up... still haven't had any issues at all regarding heat or heat damage from the HID's or halos I have on.
