I recenlty purchased a Dobeck TFI kit and a Jardine slip on for my 9R. I instaled it all by the book no problems. First trip I took was 130 miles each way. At exactly 120 miles the bike started cutting out like it was out of gas. I stopped and filled up but it didn't help. If you hold it at a steady rpm it will start to cut out and if you keep holding it it will die out right. If you give it any gas it will pick back up and run good under accel but if you hold it it will fall again. I unpluged the TFI kit and it didn't help at all. Any ideas would be great.

When you put on a new exhaust it is always a good idea to do a TPS reset. You can do this using ECMspy or by going to your dealer. Mine did the same thing when I installed my Jardine, after the tps reset everything worked great. Hope this helps.

Thank you very much for the help. I will try and make it to the dealer in the next day or so and post the results then. Thanks again.

do you have it at any rpm range or a specific one?

what's the condition of your plugs?

I bet your engine is about 100 degree too hot when you run it too. Do the TPS reset...Not the best idea to run it without a reset first.

It does it at any RPM range. It seems to be a little better high up in the RPM's but it is hard to cruise at 90. I am sure my plugs can stand to be changed. I am taking it to the dealer tomorrow for a TPS reset as well as an ECU reset and have the adaptive air reset. Hopefully with all this plus new plugs, something will fix it.

How could an air cooled engine run 100 degrees too hot? Could that be from running too rich or lean?

check to make sure no wires are rubbing anywhere, especially on the engine. I had a problem with that after my tfi install. A wire rubbed through on the rocker cover and the engine would cut out and eventually blew the ignition fuse.

I am tired of messing with it so it is going to the dealer this weekend. I will post what they find, just for all to know.

One thing the dealer did tell me that they are having a lot of problems with people putting on after market parts and the bike never running right again. He said that some times they can do a TPS reset, an ecu rest and all and it works great from then on but some times it just doesn't help at all and they have to go back to the stock set up and it works fine after that. Lets hope that isn't my problem.

Hmmm, yeah, I can sorta see where they are coming from with that. If the mods arent done correct then you can run into all sorts of troubles with performance issues.
As far as the bike getting a 100 degrees to hot, I was yainking your chain. It would seize before that happened, or so I would think. It can and will however run hotter without the TPS reset. Usually without the reset it will idle at about 1500 to 2000 rpm's. This is from running way too lean, and in turn causes excess heat. It will run up to 40 to 50 degrees hotter, but just try not to let it happen by not riding it. If you have to go far plan a number of stops to let it cool...it will be in the bikes best interest for sure. I dont know why it would just die though or want to die. After the TPS reset make sure to get on a good straight away and just run your bike at a constant 3500 rpm's for 10 min. Right after a TPS reset your bike will tend to run like crap, but running it for the 10 minutes like this will help the bikes ECM make its own last adjustments.

I know what you mean about it running like crap right after the reset but if the bike would idel higher with that being the problem then I don't think it is at all because it is ideling really low. I would say just over the 500 rpm mark. Not as high as it usually is at all. I am sure the mods were done right but that doesn't mean a wire didn't some how get down on the rocker box and melt. I will try to look at that before I take it to the dealor and spend a lot of money.

Got the bike back today. The reset didn't help anything. They ended up changing the spark plugs to fix it. I am going to take it for a ride this weekend to see if it is really fixed.
