so i have a 04 xb12r bought it last year didnt get to ride much prob put 500 miles on since i owned it but its allways had this really loud rattling noise on decel well it got louder and louder so i too it into the local hd/ buell dealer to have it diagnosed and 400bucks they found the problem bad rod bearings and fubar'd rods so now i got a bike in peices because i wasnt paying the 3grand plus they wanted to fix it so my question is what year 12r motors will swap right into mine does it have to be an o4 to match up and work wit my ecm or no and also anyone sellin good used motors? thanks guys

Up to and including '07 I believe you're fine. The '08's on ARE different.in some ways. Without going into detail, you would have to change over the engine wiring harness and ECM. I believe also, the oil lines are different. Not a huge deal, but not a simple R&R either. I have been seeing a few on fleabay. Lunatic deals a lot with a guy...I can't remember his name right now....but anyways, he has gotten me some good deals from him.

anyone sellin good used motors? thanks guys
i strongly recommend against this and here's why:
you know what you now have which is matching #'s motor with bad bottom end. what will you be buying? a crap shoot is what you'll be buying.
find a mechanic/shop in your area well versed in sportster motors....or big v-twin H-D motors and go see them.
tell them you will remove motor yourself and bring it to them for case splitting, crank rebuild, and reassembly. get their advice and price. many quality outfits in the US who do beautiful crank rebuilds at reasonable prices for sportsters and buells. if they're not set up to do the crank then have them split cases and you send off crank for rebuild. i estimate that for less than $1000 you can have this work done and a fairly fresh motor that you yourself reinstall. i would think that compares quite favorably with the cost of a junkyard motor. IMO

well i dont care to much bout numbers matching so thats why i was leanin towards a used motor and i really dont know what other trouble the one i have has instore for me because upon further investigation seems like the previous owner beat her pretty hard........sorry maybe dumb questions but whos paul? and you say more than likely my op failed do you think if it would of failed and the dummy light not come on sayin theres no pressure or no?

PaulPud is his user name, he buys and sells lots of parts etc. Good guy to deal with.

You bought a used motor(cycle) and got what you have now. You really want to chance getting another motor in similar condition?

I'd follow Lunatic's advice.

You can get lucky sometimes, but I agree. IF the original engine came apart and destroyed cases and all, well...THEN I might go salvage engine shopping. When I do my big-bore project, it will be done with a salvage yard engine just so I can keep riding during the extended period of time during the build. Your engine still runs and all, so it isn't destroyed. Fix what you have....you'll have the peace of mind knowing it's in good shape, you'll have new, fresh gaskets, (which you will more than likely wind up doing on a salvage engine anyways!), The bottom line when you consider all the pros of the finished project, will look good.
I'd follow Lunatic's advice.
2nd that! AND.....They say with age comes wisdom. IF that's the case, Lunatic should be pretty freakin' wise!! :D

got me again ricky. good one by the way. :D

at first no just a rattle on decel but after awhile i could start to hear the bottom end get louder .......was all real hard to hear at first cuz the race can drownd it all out

I see everyones point about a used engine, there is a chance. I bought 3 from paul and no issues. He has always been straight foward with me and good dude to deal with. If you dont know who your getting it from i would be a bit more hesitant.

so guys i went with the used motor hopfully i have good luck just dont have time to tear down the other motor right now but just wanted to ask after i install this motor is there a priming procedure for these motors ? cuz i know on our dry sump motors in the latemodel cars we work on you have to take the belt off and prime the oiling system with a drill to make sure all the airs bled from the feed line and that she wont have a dry start after you do an engine swap thanks
