Hi Everybody!

I own a XR1200, 2009, 25.000kms. but with a “Buell issue…” 😉

I read some threads concerning the clutch swap…My XR1200, has the “famous” Buell clutch rattling and I read that people are keen to swap this buell clutch to a XL one…!…

Strange thing is, that after I replaced the rotor sprocket to a 38t. and of course the chain, the noise started. Now the primary chain has just (warm) about 1/4”… but the noise kept the same. I don’t dare to loose more slack.
Took everything off the bike again, inspected what was causing that sound, but couldn’t find anything loose, or worn…Very strange, and frustrating. Except the loose springs in the outer clutch. That you can shake, and rattle..😉

So I’m very interested in what I would need to accomplish this swap…What kind of quality clutch plates , pressure plate etc. and hope you can help me to advise…!

P.s. I’m not that racing type😅

Thanks in advance!

A "rattling" noise as you describe would most likely be from weak or broken cush springs in the clutch basket. Would get louder in neutral/ clutch out, and quieter clutch in. IMO, Not a worry if they're just weak, but if you're that far in to see them... might as well? FYI Hinson, Wiesco, and others make baskets without springs. Racer parts yes, but not so bad on the street.

A 'whirring' noise would be more chain related and way too loose is better than even slightly too tight. 1/4" is too tight. My procedure would be to start it, warm it, leave it idling, loosen the chain adjustment 2 turns from where it is now, and tighten to the quietest point but NOT MORE than 1 3/4 turns.

Shaughn: He's inquiring about an XR. Unique basket. Not applicable.

Buell XB clutch pack DOES NOT INTERCHANGE with XR1200.

Simply purchase a new complete XR1200 clutch replacement kit including diaphragm pressure spring from any of the below sources. Each listed carries same. Very reasonably priced and I'm sure they'll ship to NL.

BARNETT POWERTRAIN COMPANY-BARNETT CLUTCH DIVISION
TWIN POWER CLUTCH REBUILD KIT---VIA J&P CYCLES
HARLEY DAVIDSON SCREAMIN EAGLE XR REBUILD KIT
POSSIBLY ENERGY ONE ALSO NOW HAS THEM---CHECK

Ahh, my bad. I opened up the Firebolt forum to read this and missed that. Thanks for the catch, eagle eyes:eagerness:

I don't remember (but assume) the XR basket is just like an XL and has no cush springs? What could the rattle be? Hoping its not just loose and jacking up the splines:upset:
