Hi guys, sorry in advance but i want to be sure on this: tonight i went in the garage and i tried a cold oil check: it was "1 x" up the minimum level on the dipstick.
Then i added some oil(just a little bit).
I went out for riding 10 minute in order to make a hot check, went back in the garage, waited 10 minute and...overfilled.
So can you be please more accurate with me: when i read in the manual that at cold check the level must be at the bottom of the dipstick what does it mean: at the bottom of the low level or under it at the bottom of the dipstick itself?
Please try to explain me in simple words: i can speak english but i m not so good.
Thanks again
Frank

right on a COLD level check you want the oil to just touch the end of the dipstick so when it's hot it'll be just at the right level.

Hi guys: i think that this issue is not clear:
the question is: to check the oil you must wait 10 minute after you stop or not?
Because in the maintenance manual it s not written to wait 10 minute.
So, ath the end, can someone tell me exactly how it is?
Thanks

They say 10 min so the oil in the upper has time do drain to the bottom and give you a true reading.

I've read later XBs ("new" oil pump location) also can have oil flow from the swing-arm reservoir backwards into the engine's sump. Bike must set awhile, hours.
Not applicable to measurement differences between checking after shut-down or after 10 minutes.

what year is the bike? The 2008 (i think) and newer have a revised oil check procedure.

Post 2008:

Cold check:

Oil should be just touching the tip of the dipstick. (on side stand)

Hot check: (after cold check)

Ride for 10 minutes, let idle for 2 minutes, turn off bike. oil should be within the marked range (on side stand). If it is near the bottom but still within the range, DO NOT ADD OIL.

That was your mistake.
