air box cover question

Why do some have a mesh screen by the gas cap and others do not? Thanks.

The ones with mesh that's where the intake is, the ones without have full use of actual ram air from the left scoop through the frame directly to the air box. Pretty sure that's accurate...

03-05 No mesh air entered airbox through left side scoop where there is a hole through the frame.

06-10 No hole in frame for added fuel capacity air enters airbox through mesh around gas cap.

I think this is related, I own a ully with the screened air intake, when I would put my tank ( air filter cover ) bag on, I would worry about blocking the air intake but, the bike never ran any different with or with out the bag on or off. Not exactly a scientific finding but rather just listening and feeling how the bike idled and ran.
