I've been fooling around with the idea of finally machining some velocity stacks for the Buell XB series bikes. These stacks are built on a similar design as the FAST intake, with a couple modifications to bring price down. They still have a space for a sewn heat barrier to fit securely around the stack, deleting the bottom of the airbox. I would have these milled in small quantities, though obviously the larger the number of units, the lower the price. These stacks would come with K&N filter.

It would be up to the buyer to provide hardware for installation (two hose clamps, one to secure the velocity stack to the throttle body, and one to secure the filter to the velocity stack) and/or a heat barrier (thermal barrier, semi-elastic material for the edges of the mat and the hole cut for the stack, and grommets).

I have the CAD file all put together, and have heard back from a number of small-run mills for an order of 5 stacks machined out of 6061 aluminum on a CNC lathe. So far, I would need to sell these at $200 shipped within the continental US per unit to make them worthwhile. I would drop this to $180 shipped within the continental US per unit for anybody who prepaid up to 5 orders. If there is enough interest for 10 orders, the price would drop to $190/$170, respectively.

Needless to say, horsepower gains over the stock rubber boot can be expected.

With a modification to the intake of this magnitude, tuning would benefit the bike greatly. I'm happy to work out a package deal that bundles the stack and my tuning services for anyone who is interested.

Please post up here if this is something you'd like to look into.

this one was a local product here is australia.

this might be a dumb question but what happens to the air temp sensor. but i really like this idea because the FAST intake was suppose to be one of the best right and I've been looking for one for a while.

You could either use the intake kit with your stock lower airbox, or harvest the IAT and sew it into a heat barrier.

I am in, wanted one for 4 yrs now and never able to find one just the heat barrier.

that doesnt have much of a velocity stack shape to it. looks like a straight pipe with a rounded lip. do you plan on adding more of a contour like the factory? im also not keen on adding a filter with a smaller surface area.

Looks like it would clear up some space for those looking for a place to stash extra mods too.

Perhaps the bottom of the airbox could be cut so that the rear 2 mounting holes and the IAT mount are left intact in one T shaped piece. It's already a perfect fit; reuse the screws and use the piece to pin down the rear of the heat shield. Leaving the front two mounting holes for screws/washers to that will pin down the heat shield and mount other accessories (airhorns, lights, Machine guns, etc... or xbrr intake vent/cowl if someone decides to glass or carbon a set.)

Nuage420b: Price without filter would be $170, shipped.

konarider94: The rounded lip, combined with a gradually decreasing internal diameter essentially duplicates the shape of a velocity stack without eating up the same external footprint of a bell-shaped stack. The way it fits within the filter ensures that function is preserved, while providing a straight wall for the filter to securely sit on the unit. The system works, as proved by the FAST intake. As to the filter concern, though the K&N flows freely enough, you are welcome to buy just the stack and secure your own filter. The reason I am bundling the two is because most people will end up purchasing the same K&N, and buying them together through me saves money.

J_Undisputed: That is indeed a way by which people could preserve their IAT. The benefit of adding a heat barrier is that the intake is more likely to draw cool air into the engine.

TACPBuell: I may, I may not. Not sure what the interest on this product is going to be. The FAST kit cost $1200 for the whole thing, so a velocity stack and filter priced at $200 is considerably more affordable. We'll see how many people are actually committed to purchasing it and go from there.

Okay, so far I have 3 interested parties:

1. xtremelow
2. Miami
3. dwrecked

We're getting close to the 5 people required to make a short-run order.

Would any of you be willing to prepay? It would make my life way easier, considering this will be a huge up-front purchase on my part.

I thought I remembered hearing that the FAST intake wasn't as impressive as reported when it came to actual numbers...truth/fiction?

It is partially true. There will be no huge gains. It is, however, a way to squeeze out a few extra horsepower and foot*pounds, while modifying a part of the bike that has long been without an aftermarket part.

It is hard to tell what the performance gains will be without comparative dyno sheets.

I know that I was very happy with my FAST intake, and that the new velocity stack I am developing is an upgrade on the initial design.
