Good question! I'd like to know this too.

Also, is it supposed to come on after you turn the key off and stay running for a few minutes?

Get a RSS, my fan rarely comes on but when it does its after the bike is shut off and only runs for maybe a minute

Yes it is supposed to run after it shuts off. I prefer it be loud enough for me to hear. I would get concerned if i couldnt hear it. But i havent heard of anyone that offers a "less noisy" fan.

The fan just lets you know your engine is hot when it comes on, since I installed the ebr ecm the fan hardly comes on now when riding, but comes on some times when I turn the bike off. Bikes lean run really hot ,bike running richer run cooler. Right side scoop helps out a lot to.

I'v got a few of those. Fuckers follow me around everywhere asking for autographs, what kinda bike is it im riding, can they ride, can they bear my children, Jeebus it gets exhausting someitmes

Nothing on these bikes are stealthy , why start now? Can you hear it when your riding? I put a rss on and it only comes on in really hot weather or if I'm sitting in traffic.

What does RSS stand for? I hear mine on my 09 come on when I'm going down the road...like tonight, it was 50 degrees and I hear it shut off just as I come to a stop sign. And its running rich....extra rich. Having probs fouling plugs. I put a one step hotter plug in to see if it would help with the plug fouling. I dont have much to go by, only been the 3rd time its been out since I bought it and the last two times it fouled plugs.

Oh gotcha, yeah the guy I bought it from put that on. Love the bike just scared everytime I start it away from home that it'll foul a plug and I'll be looking for a parts store.

i was always adamant about the RSS seeing as it had made it so long without it, and the fan did its job as it should, but once i actually dropped the cash for the RSS and installed it it became one of the best mods i've done to the bike, My fan never comes on much anymore, and its not baking my right leg nears as much on the warmer days. It is worth every penny!!! It also balanced the symmetry of the bike out!

farmer12, you probably have the "new" fan program in your ECM. It works like this, at idle it runs at slow speed and at 15mph or so it runs at full speed. The regular fan program only comes on if it reaches a certian temp. and at shut down if it needs it, which is almost always. Mine runs at shut down most of the time but only for a minuite or so.

i find the buell cooling fan super-sexy. gives me parking lot opportunities amongst other bikers when it's running to tell them that:
1-it's the turbo "winding down".
2-NOS bottle cooler system
3-optional and highly coveted "ram air assist" running self-diagnostics
4-Buell prototype after-burner chamber fresh-air injection system

I put on an RSS for the first time this season and the fan doesn't run nearly as much. Let me know if you want the part numbers and I can send them to you. The whole thing cost me around $50 from a dealership. I actually like the sound of the fan. It starts conversations.

...guess I'll have to try the RSS...

you say it only costs $50...I've seen sites that sell it for much more...for $50 I'll try it..."the conversations" I hear always start with WTF!

surdyke.com, LSHD1.com, newcastlehd in PA are some online sites to start looking for the best prices on the RSS
