so lately i've been noticing my car (99 civic SI) is making a weird whining noice when i put it in reverse. it seems to come from the fron passenger side of the car. IDK if its a bad wheel bearing, bad break pads, or my steering pump or what?... I'll go drive around my parking lot in the dark and try to get a video of it

anybody have any ideas?

the noise only happens when in reverse.

wheel hubs do that when they are going bad, not usually just in reverse but I've seen weirder things.

insert the numbers (or letters) after the = when you click the youtube button

sounds like it's rubbing on something, almost like the guard on the wheel well.

did i get it to post?....

and alright it only happens when i crank it right in reverse not left...

yes it posted, if it only does it when turning right and in reverse that would make sense that the back of the tire is rubbing on something in the back of the wheel well.

not sure if it actually is, but that would make sense.

Did your car just start making this noise? Cause thats pretty common to have a whining noise in reverse. I know my old truck did that....

his only comes when he turns one direction though, otherwise I would've said the same thing

turned wrenches at a dealer for 20years the reverse gear is straight cut thats making the noise or somthing realated to the output shaft, the right side drives that car,the rubbing noise is drum brakes im gussing and thats just dirt in the drums, could have a bad trans mount thats on the drivers frame rail a bAD TRANS MOUNT WILL CAUSE THE DRIVELINE TO BE OUT OF ALIGNMENT AND MAKE THAT NOISE.:D:D

its disk brakes, its a 99 civic SI so its got disk brakes. I know that the reverse gear is straight cut, but its not just that normal gear whine, this is something more, you can hear it in the video at the beginning when i first try it, throughout the rest of the video it doesnt really whine much, and you can only hear the reverse gear whine, which i know is normal. Then around 1;12 i had some weird nose happen to, but again i'm unsure what it was, and have never heard it before.

it still steers and drives straight down the road

Sounds like a squeak tab check the pads.
If it's close and they where installed backwards the tabs will squeal only in reverse.
You get slightly more rotor deflection by cranking the wheel and turning.

I have quite a bit of Honda experiance... I just replaced the motor in my '94 civic eSI this summer...

It sounds like a power steering whine....

Check our powersteering fluid level, low power steering fluid can cause whining especially if its the first turn after start up.

If your fluid level is low, try to find the leak obviously...

See if you can get it to reproduce going forward and turning right.

I have more theories, but I'll wait till you check your fluid level...

I'll check the fluid this next Tuesday when I get back from this underway trip rebel. I'll also check my brake pads!

With it being on one side, and happening when you turn it to lock on the right, I would venture a guess that it is a CV axle. How many miles? does it have a random "pop" also? I would check the engine mounts too, because they can fail and bind the CV axles, causing some weird things.

To me that sounds like an electrical buzzer noise. Its tone is constant and not speed dependent, at least from what I could tell on the video. Which rules out rubbing or anything on the engine/driveline.

Have you owned this car a while?

I can offer to come over to take a look at it. I need to get in one more ride before I head out of town for the holidays and your only a hour away. I'll sent you my # by PM.
