Anybody ever weld up the frame hole for more fuel?

On early model XB's.... if you switch to the late style airbox cover, one could in theory, cut open the frame, remove the air "tube" and cap off the top and bottom holes w/ new welded in plate.

I know we are only talking maybe 1/2 gallon of gas.

Anyone ever try something like that?
 
honestly, for the amount of work that would be you could probably put in a newer frame with less hassle. welding gas tanks is a pain in the ass.
 
interesting idea since we do have small gas tanks but it prolly would be more work than its worth... and I dont think anyone with any amount of commen sense would try that without cleaning out the tank first lol^^

Its not just the work of welding the tank, its tearing down the bike and rebuilding it that adds to the project. Now if you were going to powder coat your frame anyway. Go for it!!!!!!!! Any customization that works is great when you can save money!
 
drain the tank fill the bottom part with water cut a notch at the front and rear of the hole weld a plate over the top and bottom of the hole drain the tank flush with some gas fill the tank and ride. half day job.[confused]
 
Not so simple. Obviously you'll want to drain and wash the tank throughly, then you'll need to hook up a secondary tank of argon to purge the tank for killing any chance of fumes igniting and also to purge the backside of the weld joint. The powdercoat will be trashed due to all the heat you'll be throwing at the frame....aluminum takes a lot of heat to weld since it sucks the heat from your welding area and disperses it. It's worth it if you want a project, but will be expensive since you'll be paying a welding shop to do the job.....then powder coat on top of that.

thats what the water is for

aluminum takes a lot of heat to weld since it sucks the heat from your welding area and disperses it.

tig and heat block will take care of that


.....then powder coat on top of that.

both plates would be hidden
 
How do you guys anticipate a tank with open holes in it holding water? I sure wouldn't weld a gas tank that has water in the bottom half and open fumes in the upper half... I won't even weld around fuel tanks on vehicles, because of fumes. Fumes are more explosive than the liquid.

when you pour the water in the filler neck it displaces the fumes then cut the notches.been welding tanks for over 20 years
 
My buddies brother has an auto shop and ive seem him do it numerous times. I watched him weld part of the underside of the tank on my gixxer...
 
Acerbis sells a 1.6 gallon auxillary gas tank. I have it mounted to a base that snaps to the bike instead of the pillion. The tank has a stopcock that remains off until I get 100 miles on a fill up. I then open the valve and the fuel flows through a quick disconnect/shutoff fitting and into a bung I've installed in the lower left frame. It gives me a 240+ mile range before hitting reserve.
