so i was riding home yesterday when all of a sudden my bike had no power and was jetting exhaust out of the top of the motor....when i got home i realized that the rear plug had launched itself out of the head....upon further inspection ive found that it is stripped out...what now?

I helicoiled mine and rebuilt the engine at the same time...cause you have to take the head off. IF you try and tap it...CLEAN all the metal shavings out.

could of been worse; i had the center part of the spark plug break off into the wrench. the outer part with the threads stayed in the damn hole. :D

How often has this happens is this a common problem I've done the plugs on my buell a couple times no issue anything I can do to try and prevent this from happening obviously not over tightening .sorry to hear about your bike

u can tap or rethread with the head on the bike, just use a lot of grease on the tap, and then start the motor with that plug still out of it, let it run for a few seconds to get all the crap out of that cylinder...( it will launch whatever is in there out of the sparkplug hole, so do not be looking directly into it when the motor is running)

I used a Heli-coil kit on my Harley, took the head off to do it but if I had to do it again I would leave it on and use grease on the tap. worked very well and have over 20,000 miles on it now.

you can do a timesert job without taking the engine apart. use grease when cutting .then just make sure you use compressed air and blow out the cyl after the job and you will be ok. thats what i did on mine after installing the timesert and then i checked it with my boreoscope. clean as a whistle. rode all last year and still doing good this year. just an idea

I never did it on a spark plug, but I've used helicoils on other stripped threads and they work great. IMO they are just as good as a new threaded hole. I use red loctite with them when I screw them in then let it set up and that helps hold them in place as well.

Yes definitely go with the timesert. I did and don't regret it at all. Plus it's a permanent fix as opposed to the helicoil. And you can have higher compression

i called up timesert directly(type in timesert, search the net) and ordered it through them. excellent product in my opinion. where are you located? if you were close id let you borrow mine and you would just have to buy the sleeves. but if you bought them they were about 125. higher than helicoils, but these are there to stay after puting them in. helicoil versions have a possibility of backing out nexttime you go to take the sparkplug out.
