I had to remove my header wraps after I serviced my K&N air filter and some of the oil dripped onto the white wraps. Not only did it look like ass with the big red stain but it smoked like hell.

I've been thinking about painting them instead of re-wrapping them. Has anyone done this and what paint did you use????

Pictures would also be very helpful.

Thanks

We painted the header wrap with header wrap paint.
you have a few options.
Dei wrap paint or exhaust paint.

I painted mine silver then black as I have some scratches... with some high temp paint. look into my pics

I agree with the above recommended polishing method - WD40 and 3M Scotch Brite pad.

I read a review on a wrist watch forum that, "The red 3M Scotch Brite pad leaves a much smoother, much finer finish than the tried and true green and yellow SB pad. I was always very happy with the results the green and yellow pad provided, so I am extremely pleased with the even nicer finish from the red pad."

These guys tend to be perfectionists.

You can read the entire review with photos here:

New red Scotch Brite pad even better

You can substitute other penatrants in place of WD40.

I have mine painted with VHT ceramic exhaust black paint and then wrapped and DEI wrap paint. Check out the other header paint , powdercoat , polished and wrap threads.
How did you drip k&n oil on your header wrap???

I serviced my K&N filter and put it back on my bike too soon. (probably put too much oil on it too) It didn't fully absorb into the filter and it ran down off the filter onto the wrapped headers.

You really cannot paint or powdercoat headers. If you want it to last you need to have them jet-hotted. Otherwise its just temporary. The pipes get so hot and paint can't hold on. Even high heat paint isn't made to withstand heat continuously. Although, you can paint other parts without a problem. You should not paint the headers unless you want to do it over and over again.

Mine is wrapped with DEI wrap and then painted black with DEI header wrap paint... I touch it up once a year as it turns to a grey overtime.... works great though.

I wouldnt just high temp paint the headers.. they get so hot that it will flake off over time. The best bet it either paint the wrap, polish, or ceramic coat.

My new race header is going to be black cermic

I couldn't believe how good this method worked ! Made them look new. [up]

Walls, it worked on your 09 headers?? Mine turned ****** looking after a while. I thought someone said they changed the metal on later models that and it didnt take this method so well?

Yep! It brought them back to looking new but now i need to re-do it since they're showing some "tarnish" again. I must of deleted the pic of when i did it last.

the black wrap has powder in it to make it black. it makes a mess when you wrap them and it turns white pretty fast

Fortunately I have a jet-hot facility right around the corner. This is the same company ASB uses to ceramic coat. I had mine finished in satin black for about $170. First they coated inside and out w/ silver(to hold the heat in) then they coated it with the black satin. I love the look and it will last for years and years from what I'm told.
