So Ive been considering a ktm 300exc, even saw an older 380 which would be pretty insane. I would still keep the buell but it would be fun to rip around the streets on a 2 stroke dirtbike...I think. Its been a while since Ive even seen a 2 stroke but faint memories still exist. The obvious other choice would be a 4 stroke exc, but i already have a 4 stroke, and its a 1200. Anyone want to give some opinions?

I have a Yamaha rd250 that I used to ride...twin cylinder 2stroke. Gonna fix it up over the winter to road ready. Street legal from factory.

I had an 81 RD350LC street bike. Next to my Buell it was the most fun I ever had on 2 wheels. I also have an 08 Yamaha Banshee 350 twin two stroke. Love them.

i want to see about getting me cr250r 2 stroke reg for the street :). there is two cr500 around me that have a CA plate

I had an RZ350. Been debating finding another. That was a fun bike. RZ500 would be awesome but you never see them for sale.

Yea I want to go dirtbike/supermoto would even be fun to convert one to a super single. The old 2 stroke street bikes are cool but not for me.

i have a 94 300exc 2 stroke and used to ride it on the road until someone made a u turn right in front of me and i t-boned him. it took a good hit and only broke off a mud guard which is quite surprising. the only issue of riding a 2 stroke aroud was always carrying the oil with me. other than that it was a blast to rip!

First bike I had was a yamaha 200cs3 two stroke,I am trying to locate one that can be rebuilt not to ride much but just to have one.

you going to make one?

holy old thread revival, i am still planning on buying one. Right after i picked up my chopper project i found a ktm 380 for sale. I was pissed and would have rather bought that...oh well.

I can't say enough good about the 4-stroke Su-Mo genre. Light, torquey & flickable. Everything that's great about the XB, times two!

I'm also a big fan of 2-strokes, both on the track & off-road. I rode an old RZ350 around on the street for a summer long ago.

But 2-strokes have a very peaky power curve, they don't compression-brake, and they require a lot more maintenance, mile-for-mile, than a typical 4-stroke. None of these characteristics make them particularly streetable.

I'd keep the KTM for the track or off-road, and stick with 4-stroke in the street.

Looking forward to hear which you chose!

I have decided on a 2 stroke. It seems like easier maintenance to me than a 4 stroke. Okay you rebuild the top end once a year or so. 4 stroke dirtbikes require frequent oil changes and valve adjustments. I see places that recommend 5-8 hour offroad oil and filter change interval and 8-10 on street. Also valve adj every 20-30 hours.

And 2 strokes can be peaky but some of them that are tuned for trail riding have a very smooth power delivery. It has a lot to do with the pipe you run. The ktm 300 is fantastic offroad. Talk about light and flickable. Its not something im going to take long trips on the road but to drive around the city sometimes would be fun.

i have had a few Kawasaki triples over the years, 500cc and 750cc widow makers they called them, Wortha lot of money these days and very collectable. I still have a bike i got 10 years back, a S2 350cc version thats not as scary. Kept it for Tiddler rides. Small bore rides in our local vintage club.
I have had several enduros as well,, sold one recently a 1971 Yamaha CT1, I have my 1972 Suzuki TS250 which i am keeping and LOADS of fun to ride, Street legal and fast enough for the street, but I wouldnt want to do a lot of freeway miles on it. I picked up last spring a KTM 400cc High breather from the original owner, bought new in 1976, I am debating making it into a cafe racer, Its a street legal bike,
I DO have one for sale,,,Interested? Big F**k'n Green Mean machine! Its a Kawasaki KDX 400, 1979. has long travel but still has dual shocks so is legal for almost vintage or Bomber class if you want to race it, but came with lights from the factory and possible you might be street legal with it. Comes with factory workshop, and assy manuals,

Ha, never owned one, but have certainly ridden one. I still can't decide if I was most scared of the flexible frame, sketchy brakes, or binary powerband! :D

Yep, dem triples be trippy, Years ago, I had a friend who was riding with 2 other guys in the local interstate... They looked over and there was a bright green kawasaki merging onto the freeway from the onramp,
As they watched the other rider, spotting them, cracked open the throttle, perhaps to show off his awesome acceleration? Maybe a jap bike inferiority complex? As these guys were riding Chopped Harleys....

anyway,, sure enough, the Green bike shot ahead very quickly but just as quick the front end came up fast, maybe too fast and the rider hung there for a moment then twitched, wobbled and completely lost control and came over backwards,, down he went,,,,,,,hard crash. My buddy and his friends did the right thing, blocked traffic, and rendered aid. Dave loved to tell the story as he told everyone at the crash scene and ever since,,,,
"I WANT one of those!" I sold mine to a collector who ships them to Japan and Europe as at the time I needed the money and they were not worth anything here in the US but the prices were very high over there. Still are, Especially in the UK,, I still have my 350cc S2 version of those, nowhere near the power, more of a gimmick, the frames were improved as well, The local vintage club bitched about it tho.. said the intent was for small bore bikes just to buzz around and have fun, they though the 350 triple was too much and not in the spirit of the ride and dropped the CC size from 350cc to 250cc because of me. The next ride i took a BSA 441 victor (4 stroke single) and rode that and told everyone it was a 250 as they all kinda look alike anyway.

2 strokes are fun though,, find some castrol R and put a table spoon or 2 in with the fuel, if you ever smelled the exhaust with castrol R in it, you will know what im talking about. Smells like old time racers,
