Eric, Squid, and Tex, thanks for contributing. I'll probably just take off the front part of the air box BASE for now and maybe work on something clear for a "heat shield". I'd planned to add a heat barrier between the airbox base and engine.

I have a Kickash and a Valencia Orange airbox cover and would like to see more than the airbox base.

Im no expert but I would think with a rss it would pull in more air like you want and if moving at a good speed hot air wouldnt be a major issue. And besids, how much power loss would there be if the air was heated that much...enough to feel a difference...or just dyno numbers.

Eh, I'm not so much concerned with how much air it pulls in, I simply want it for aesthetic reasons. At the same time, I don't want a negative in engine performance because of it...

I have did the open airbox a its a great mod for sounds I like the looks it has.

If you use Lexan, be aware of how it responds to heat. Some of the stuff I have seen, will get more brittle, warp or even get cloudy with heat. Also considering how many of the clear airbox covers crack at the mounting holes you may want to think about grommets and or nylon washers for where the fasteners are. Just a thought.

If you want to see the engine, but want to try to keep the heat out, what about forming a piece of clear plastic to the same shape as the original base? You could vacuum form the underneath of the original base, then that would serve as a "mold" and then vacuum form again on the inside of the "mold" and you'd have an identical piece. It'd actually be better because it'd be smooth all the way across, the air filter would fit the same, samd with IAT and the breather hoses (if you have them).

Vacuum forming is pretty easy, you could do it at home with an oven and shop vac.

Thanks. Also, you may want to router to recess it a little to create a lip or as Snrusnak suggested, think about keeping the original shape with the clear material. It just kind of occurred to me that a flat plank of lexan with no catch area would just let any blow back of excess K&N maintenance oil or oil over fill that gets shot up the stack, leaking into your crotch area / down under your seat at speed.

My intent was to actually keep the stock base, and just cut it back to make more of the engine visible. Then, in the open areas that I'd now created, add a clear lexan to keep the heat down... I've got a extra airbox base and guess I'll just get to cutting and see what happens.
