Are these fouled plugs?

Working through some issues, took out the plugs to see if they are fouled. Plugs have less or just at 500 miles on them.

Just looking for some opinions.

Cheers!

they're not fouled but you should index them to avoid the sooty deposits on the porcelain area facing the ground electrode. you want the open end of the ground electrode pointing towards the combustion chamber. take a sharpie and put a line on the outside shell or porcelain corresponding to that specific point. then install and tighten until that line points toward the combustion chamber.

I this is a noob question as I ask this, but which way is the combustion chamber facing? If I place an index line on it, which way should the line and open side be facing?

Thanks guys!

Cheers!

Hi (John) Lunatic! This is great advise. We do this in race engines all the time.I might just add for BuellRonin....as you're a noob, (NO offense!), do NOT overtighten to get the line where you want it and strip your threads!! I just seen this scenario in my head when you said you're still a new guy!

None taken, just the first time I've ever heard this. I never over tighten plugs, once they are snug...its good.

Cheers!

Great! I TRY to be 'kind and respectful' on here. SOME guys get all bent when you say certain things! You CAN'T please everyone I 'spose?! Anyways...to answer your question, since Lunatic disappeared, (Lol!), I will TRY to explain this in words. The 'opening' or 'gap' (?), (OPPOSITE the ground strap), should face to the 'inside' of the bike.If you are sitting on the bike, the plug is sitting on the very left side of the combustion chamber. The chamber is to the right of the plug. I hope this helps as you'd probably like to get it back together. :)

Yea, no worries. You take the good with the bad when it comes to the INTERWEB...haha.

But thanks for the additional clarification, I see what you mean. I had it facing the wrong way (not facing correctly), the reasoning it's marked up the way it is.

Cheers!

Indexing won't make a 'night and day' difference or anything, but it theoretically should HELP cold start fouling just from better placement. It does't 'cost' anything, and it sure doesn't HURT anything either! Nice chatting with you! :)

in my experience you cant tell just by looking at a plug if its fouled, unless you are talking soot caked on electrode, but I have had many a plug that looked normal but was "fouled" and non-functional
