So I finally got a few things fix and decide that before i get back on the road I will change the oil and primary oil... after im done i notice a small little leak at the bottom of the clutch inspection cover so I start to go about checking the tightness of the bolts at guess what it looks like I over tightened and starting pulling the threads off the cover so great I guess now I gotta buy a new primary cover

wait they are stripped? I don't get what failed. You mey be able to just take it to a machinist and have it drilled and tapped to a larger size and just get a larger screw. This isn't hard at all and if you have an appropriate tap and a drill press you could have the job done in 5 mins. if its just the inspection cover bolts this would be a perfectly acceptable fix.

You could probably tap it to a larger size and put in a larger diameter bolt. In the future buy some Thread-locker so you will have peace of mind about the bolts not vibrating out when low torque is required. Sears can hook you up on thread taps.

i like threaded inserts better than heli coils. You have to drill a hole and tap it for the heli coil anyway. then you have to buy the special install tool. just buy a threaded insert. a whole piece of metal is better than a wound up piece of wire. threaded inserts will have loctite on them or pins that you hammer in to lock it in place.

threaded inserts

click the thread locking ones to the right of heli coils

the Heli-coil kit I bought at Autozone came with the tool and 5 heli-coils was 20$ 1/4x20 size is what you want you will need a 17/64th drill bit

for this relatively trivial part all of these thigs will work, but drilling and tapping larger is always the best way to go if you can make it happen. threaded insert is a close second and heli-coils aren't too far behind them.

The problem with drilling and tapping larger is that the holes in the cover have to been enlarged and the threads are still aluminum instead of steal as they would be with an insert or a helicoil. Also the heads of the bolts may not fit into the recess if you go with a larger bolt. Just something else to concider. Either way dont buy a new cover just for a stripped out 1/4" bolt.

okay I am going to get the helicoil kit tomorrow... It looks like I could use a new gasket on the clutch inspection cover as well this maybe rigging it but do you think I could get away with some gasket maker?

by gasket maker do you mean cut your own out of gasket material or rtv? rtv would work but id make a gasket or buy one. If you really didnt want to buy or make a new gasket and your old gasket is bad like you say it is than i would put a small amount of rtv on the gasket to seal things up.

sorry bout your luck, but my cousin did this exact same thing to his 2008 XB12s, and I laughed at him.... Teeny, tiny bolt = inch pounds. Bigger bolt = foot pounds.
It happens to all of us, I'm just glad it happend to me at work and I got paid to fix my oversight.

But, for a fix I say drill and tap all three holes a size bigger and being they are so small and you have pilot holes in place I would use a hand drill....
