Just bought 2007 XB12Stt with 9k kms on the clock. The bike had been stood for quite a while so when i got it i changed the engine oil/filter and transmission fluid, I also changed the spark plugs.

The bike came fitted with a Buell race can and a K&N filter and the stock ECM fitted.
It ran great till i took it to HD to have them hook up the race ECM that came with it and do a TPS reset.
It then started running rough at low RPMs surging and bucking, also there was a lot of backfire through the
exhaust and also the through the air intake.

I took the bike back to HD they said there must be a problem with the race ECM, so told them to put the stock ECM back.

Now its even worst more backfiring exhaust and air intake, it cuts out but starts up just fine and now when it has warmed up it idles at 2000rpm.

When it is at higher revs the bike is awesome i love how it rides but now after a month im starting to regret buying it.

Does anyone have any ideas.

In my amateur opinion it sounds like two things are going on:
1) you have an intake leak
2) your TPS has not been properly reset

An intake leak will cause your idle to hang up around 2k. This will also make reseting the TPS very difficult.
If your idle has been adjusted too high this will also cause the idle to hang up or increase to 2k at stops.
Go here http://www.buellmods.com/downloads/viewcategory/8-manuals
And download a service manual.
If you've done any research about trouble shooting issues on Buell motorcycles you will discover that Harley techs/Buell techs usually don't have a clue how to work on Buells. It's a problem that we Buell enthusiasts have had to overcome since day one! Don't get me wrong, there are some good techs out there but they are a rare bread.
Do a google search on how to check for an intake leak. Also, go on fleabay, amazon or wherever and order an ECMspy cable. Download ECMspy and start by checking for trouble codes.

Thanks for your response. I grabbed a can of brake cleaner and went through every connector the injectors I took to Bosch and had them cleaned.

No more popping out of the intake and normal amount backfire
Manually adjusted the idle and ive ordered an ECMspy cable so hopefully I can sort myself out (With the help of forum users). HD are really crap out here
Thanks again

Get the cable, do the TPS reset yourself, and the ECM is pretty easy to swap whenever. I wouldn't trust that the mechanics did anything right! I really don't understand how they are justified in taking in a well running bike, then returning something that runs like sh|t. [confused]
I programmed a race map to a guys computer, but flubbed the TPS reset in my hurry. It ran, but terrible. I just re-did the TPS and it ran great after that. YMMV.
If it still acts up, then take a look at other things, especially the intake gaskets if the issues aren't relieved.

^^^^^ very good info above from the usual suspects. as with anything mechanical, anytime something is swapped out or a change made to a major component(ecm) and shortly thereafter a problem arises.....99% of the time that problem is a result of what was done. do you understand the correct method to reset the tps on your 2007 and how to ride in "learn mode" following reset?

I haven't got a clue, I've seen a pretty good step by step video on you tube.
Im sure i can figure it out[confused]. I wont go back to HD so I have to
There arent too many good mechanics here in Dubai

do you have ecmspy software and patch cable for your bike and a computer....laptop or whatever?
if so let me know and if not purchase it and let me know. then i'll walk you thru the process.

Ran the bike over the weekend, did just shy of 1000kms, Everything seems to be running ok.
Had the occasional stutter, pop and surge. The ECMspy cable should arrive soon hopefully

Am i best to stick with stock ecm or use the race ecm?

If it was me I would put the race ecm in and when you get your Ecmspy let john know and like he said he will walk you thru it. By the way he knows his shit when it comes to Buells and he is a great guy.

you're too kind rick. thanks very much for the compliment my friend. :)

Ok cable has finally arrived, took longer than expected.

I hooked up the race ECM did the TPS reset everything seemed fine did the tickover set the idle perfect.
Took it for a little ride down the road (200m)
Ran like a 1 legged dog with an itchy arse.
So i pushed it back home checked cables and wires took the air filter and there's the problem.
Some numbnut (me) had left some cloth in the intake to keep dust out whilst the air filter was getting cleaned.

So did the process again everything seems good. Going to take it for 300km ride tonight when it cools down.

Thanks All

my 05' 9r had low idle hickup and ran rough when i bought it. the steps i tok to get it running like new was: replace sparkplugs with iridium. then used seafoam top engine cleaner and lube from autozone. ran that throught the intake. after that i had the tps reset and now the bike is running like it just came out of the factory if not better.

When it comes to H/D and Buell just dont take it back there due to most do not even want to work on Buells. If you can get away from that.
Get the cable do a Throttle Position Reset.
there is plenty of help on the forum and here and on you tube videos to teach how to do a tps reset. your Idle is usually for the Stock setting is 950/ rpms. just take your time and you will be fine. See if you can find a shop around where you live if needed that is Buell Friendly. You will have to feel that out
Also it is possible the Stealership may have tried to load Fuel maps on top of the ECMs already programed unit. Not sure but be careful once you start your work and post up with your findings.Small Things first.*Jimi;)
