Backfiring on deceleration with a Drummer pipe - normal?

I vote ride it and don't worry about it. That was the advice from Kevin, and he seems to know what he's talking about. My Warrior backfires occasionally on decel, and it is sometimes so loud that it sounds like a shotgun went off. It is dyno tuned and runs like a raped ape. The guys at the shop said with my pipes and the emissions equipment on the bike, the backfires will never completely go away.

If your bike is running dangerously lean, you will notice hesitation, surging, missing, and a general loss of power at whatever point in the power band it is lean. Also, it doesn't sound like you are having any backfiring issues in or near the combustion chamber if you don't hear anything that sounds like a grenade exploding under your balls. If it is pulling hard from idle to redline with no issues, what more can a guy ask for? If you are in doubt, before shelling out to have it tuned if you don't want to attempt it yourself, you can always pay $50 for a couple of dyno pulls with a wideband readout and see what your AFR curve looks like.

If it the fact that you just cannot stand the sound, your best option is probably the "restrictor plate." I don't think that any amount of tuning will get rid of all of the decel popping, because it does nothing to prevent air backflow into the muffler, which is what decel popping is.

Please know that I am no sort of Buell expert, and have in fact only owned my Buell for a couple of months. I have, however, been around cars and bikes since I was a little kid and have turned more than my fair share of wrenches, so I'm just speaking from my past experience.

Does anyone think a Honda dealer would even have the means or know how to fix this?

I don't think they would attempt to tune it. It doesn't cost anything to ask though.

I'm thinking of trying a dyno tuning at the Harley dealer.

Make sure it's former Buell dealer and they have Buell tech on site.

Magic, do they still do tps resets on 08s?

I'm not sure, mine is 03 XB9S and it runs better after TPS reset

Hmmmm. Nobody suggested a Dyno tune? That's my recommendation.

By saying:

If they willing to tune your bike and have knowledge and experience.

I meant dyno tune...

if your not tech and bike savy the most simple thing is get a ebr Ecm.

if it doesn't have a kn or race airfilter you won't hurt it by ridding it .

The pops on decel are un burnt gas .

Both dealers near me are former Buell dealers. I really wish I knew if I even have an issue or not, it's frustrating. I wish the bike had a stock exhaust on it. So, if a dealer was a Buell dealer and they have a dyno, they should be able to tune what I currently have installed to stop the pops as much as possible? I feel retarded for asking these questions over and over but I really want to make the best decision.

I was looking at the ECMs on EBR... would I want an XB12 ECM for a Ulysses? Do they use the same ECM as the Lightnings/Firebolts? Thanks again!

I have a GB exhaust that flows similar to a drummer, (modified magnaflow exhaust) and It popped on decel after installation.

The EBR race ECM Stopped the popping. Plug n' play. There is one specific for the drummer.

The XB12 series motor is common to all XB12 series bikes. uly, lightning, firebolt. all the same. muffler and all

Again, thanks for the replies EVERYONE. I'm going to ride it like it is for a while until I can afford an EBR ECM. Home repairs/remodeling are getting in the way! I was happy to find out that I can perform the TPS reset myself without hooking the bike up to a computer or anything, this is REALLY cool and only takes about 10 seconds! I'll buy the ECM in a few months and do a TPS reset and pray that the popping stops. Do the stock ECMs sell on eBay I wonder? hmmmm...

I have an 08 and put a drummer on 6 months ago. rode it for a while with the same decel popping. Got the EBR ECM, plugged it in, did the simple TPS reset, then the instuctions said to let it idle for 10 minutes to let the IAC reset, and it was done. No more popping, and smooth power and response.

Sorry to hi-jack but my xb12r w/D&D it has a race ECM but "pops" pretty bad when i let off the gas. I like it but im not sure if its normal or ok. What do you guys think? Please tell me its ok lol.

Also i am sorry i STILL havent introduced my new bike. I promise i will soon.

The exhaust will pop from unburned fuel due to the 08+ had an(on orignal muffler)an active valve[butterfly] inside the muffler on Stock bikes. Other years have them as well. Unless you get the ECM tweaked a bit it will do that . I work on a lot of the XB bikes,I have a XB12R 08/09 set of xb bikes. My Street bike pops some but has never hurt the bike (This is due to to the way the drummer is made). Its opened up pretty good so you don't need to worry. If you don't let off the throttle so fast it will lessen some. But a tune will help it if it bothers you a lot.The TPS also on 08+ XB bikes HAS to be reset about every 2 tank fulls or so. THE newer XBs are easier to do on that. This won't stop the poping But is critical for idling. The Erik Buell Racing ECM has a better map for Decell and IF I was YOU i would keep the Stock ecm for a spare cause you will eventually need it . Plus as you get into the bike you'll see that you can tune the stock one really good with Tuner Pro.It just takes a little practice.BTW a Stock exhaust Won't Pop at ALL.Its an E marked Caty.exhaust and very Quite.Make sure you keep the cable and the upper assembly in the Airbox for the use of a STOCK muffler.

Lol you went kind of on a rant there but i think i got the point "its ok and normal for the D&D to pop."

Thank you. And yes i have both ECM's.
