Bad rattle and vibration from engine

Today I put about 40 miles on my bike before stopping at the store. When I came back out and started it up the engine had a loud ticking noise like a metallic slapping noise. I have heard this recently before on startups but the noise would go away quickly. This time the ticking stayed regardless of what rpm it was revved to. to me the sound is comparable to the sound of a dry clutch on a ducati. As i got on the road the bike began to vibrate like the engine was out of balance. I pulled over and checked the oil and looked to see if the cases had any holes in them. All looked good so I took off again, this time watching the temp gauge. Now I had a loud ticking and strong vibration but the engine still seemed to have power. As i was traveling at about 45 mph the temp gauge went from 180 area to 208 deg F within a minute. I shut the bike off and haven't restarted it yet. Wondering if anyone has input as to where I should start with this diagnosis? The bike has about 7200 miles. Stator and other charging issues were supposedly addressed under warrantee along with a timing chain problem under warrantee as well all before i purchased the bike. Any input is appreciated. thanks.

I don't what the noise might be, but that temperature change doesn't seem out of the ordinary. In 80F weather my coolant temp is almost always in the 190s and low 200s.

UPDATE: pulled the bike apart to diagnose the problem. Still have the loud rattling in the engine. Seems to be in the valve train area. But while idling i noticed that the back cylinder head pipe was glowing red! that explains the rapid coolant temp increase. The injector ohmed out at 13.1 compared to the front one which is 13.7. Seems to look alright. The rear spark plug is white (just changed plugs a few hundred miles ago). Seems to be running way lean. Still not sure if this is related to the rattle and vibration when driving. Anyone run into lean rear cylinder issues?

so today i ran the engine to listen for where the rattle noise was comming from. engine was noisy but consistent. Ran it up and down the driveway to see if it still had the bad vibration. No vibration anymore! However within the 5 minutes of riding it, the temp light came on (about 230 deg F). So after narrowing the rattle down to the clutch side case i tore into it. The water pump impeller was freewheeling (should be connected to crank through gear drive) so that was my first indication of what was causing the rapid heat up. After getting the case off, the nut on the end of the crank output was loose! The pin was sheared that aligns the gear on the crank driving the transmission with the gear that runs the counterbalance gear and also the water pump gear. This caused all three of my problems at once (rattle, vibration, and overheating) So parts are ordered. but warning to others! make sure that nut is tight on the crank output!!
