hey guys. got a bad rattle going on on left side (shifter side) of my 04 xb12. doesnt do it at idle...just when you rev it up...if you put your hand on the side of the primary cover you can feel it. think you guys can point me in the right direction?

if im not mistaken thats the side the primary chain and gears are on....would that be going out?

no i havent. for some reason i was thinking it was on the other side. just happened a bit ago so its dark outside and the bike was pretty warm from riding around town for 45 min or so. will look into that tomorrow. just wasnt sure if that was main culprit. i was wanting to swap to xb9 gears and chain....so i suppose if it is to far to be tightened correctly ill look into finding a set of those

remove window at top center of primary cover. is the plate held onto the cover by 2 torx screws.....NOT 3.
do at room temp....for safety....REMOVE KEY.....RED RUN SWITCH TO OFF POSITION....put your finger in the window and press up on bottom of the chain. do this several times with firmness. now do it again. approx 1/2 inch chain movement? ok. less or more? needs adjusted. adjuster at bottom center of primary. it is the very long threaded stud sticking down towards ground locked in place by 5/8th inch bolt. screw it in....chain tightens up....screw it out...chain gains slack. don't understand this? get some help from someone who does. the adjustment is crucial that it be performed correctly.

Will check it here in a sec. Don't see the stud though...manual shows it on outside of primary but there isn't one there...

Few pics. Definitely seems loose...I wasn't pushing up all that hard and it went above the window

wow. Well i got it figured out. there is an exhaust bracket the comes up from under the primary right there and attaches to the side of the chin...that bracket had snapped in half and was rattling like crazy. Glad its nothing major...also noticed i lost both of my chin bolts in the front lol...but it was good that i checked my primary chain as it was a little loose. ty everyone for the help and pointers....means a lot to have helpful ppl here to give you advice when you need it!

^^^^^^ if you ever develop any sort of "rattle" or "pinging" that changes with rpm's....always check your exhaust system first. start at the 4 header studs/nuts....go to header/muffler attachment bolt...then to front and rear mounting blocks and the 4 large clamps. 99% of the time that is where these noises emanate from.
