So I bought a new battery in June (2011) because the positive terminal had melted causing a bad connection. Just recently my bike had troubles starting so i bought a battery tender today and went to attach the connectors to the battery. Well, the bolt is basically soldered (can see the melted metal)into the positive terminal, aka stripped screw and I don't have any damn metric sockets.

Long story short can anybody diagnose the issue aside from the obvious getting the bolt out first. Anyone with similar issues. Brand new battery, melting at the positive terminal.

Any and all advice appreciated, ride safe!

Also, 2 weeks ago, i got a check engine light (after installing proseries race pipe/k&n). Checked the trouble code, trouble code 16 (battery voltage), did a tps reset. No more engine light. One problem after another this summer.

Sounds like you and quadracer have the same type issue, loose or dirty battery connections, blue loctite is your friend in these cases,

i had my negative post melt while my fuel pump failed. Thought it was a serious issue but the harley tech reackons he see's dyna's try to weld the battery to the clamp or box. They fixed the pump but wouldnt change the battery. Just told me to check terminals are tight before riding. They actually put the battery tender on before delivery .

Thanks for the replies, its a 2004 XB12R. At this point i'm thinking about taking it to the dealership unfortunately.

don't know if you resolved your problem yet but in my experience any melting or welding type problems at a battery terminal can only be caused by either an actual battery problem, voltage regulator problem or loose terminals causing arcing. did you check your actual running DC battery voltage? if the battery is reasonably new and in a good state of charge, you should see something along the lines of 13-14.5 DC volts at 2000 rpm, something close to that. if higher it's almost always the regulator. hope that helps.

YOUR RIGHT ULY! sorry bout the caps see my voltage reg is out so that probaly why mine is doing that but after i get it in i will check back here and on my post to see if it fixed it

and u said u had a engine light for battery volotage well sence my voltage reg went out it has a engine light that comes on and off how do i check the code and can voltage reg going out cause that?

When u get melting, its +&- arcing, just like in welding. Check ur plug connectors; make sure ur regulator is the correct part # for the bike. They changed in '08 so 03-07 are diff

Yea, bike is going to the doctor (almost as expensive as a real one). Its not a loose connection, well it wasnt until the terminal melted. Gonna take it to hals and have them check the voltage regulator and possibly fix it up.

Quad- i checked my trouble code using an ecm spy cable and running the codes through that software, took a little bit to download all the stuff to make it run on your computer but its worth it.

After 3 hours of "diagnosing" the problem, they figured out that the seat was putting pressure on the terminal causing it to arch. No problems with wires/VR/stator, tech said it was a common problem... wish I would've noticed, and wish it didn't take him 180 dollars to figure it out but hey, my bike runs without melting batteries. So just a heads up for the any buellers out there with the trouble code 16 coming on, take a look at your battery positioning.
