So i was loading my bike into the trailer last night to take it away for the weekend, and I heard a noise coming from the belt area. Bike is completely off and not running. It seems that when i push the bike in reverse that the belt starts coming off of the pulley where the tensioner wheel is and starts rubbing on the pulley cover. Almost makes a sound of an old wooden roller coaster pulling up the first hill. Not sure what could cause this. I have over a couple hundred miles on it since I removed the rear axle and everyhting still seems tight and straight. It runs fine otherwise. Any suggestions?

Is the tensioner loose or damaged in any way? bearing etc? I know the front pulley has a lip on the outside and the rear one has a lip on the inside to prevent this. If I understand what you're saying, the belt must be climbing over one of those lips... The only thing I can figure is a loose belt and the only way I can imagine that is a damaged tensioner...

The tensioner seems to spin freely just fine. I thought at first it was the tensioner bearings but they seem good. There arent any issues going forward. It would have to be jumping over the front pulley but I didnt pull the cover off to check on it. If I just push it forward it goes back straight on quicker than it starts sliding off. It doesnt seem to slide to the outside at all if I back the bike up in a completely upward stance. When I lean it is when it comes off. AKA turning it around in the garage last night so I could put it in the trailer backwards

[confused]

I'd pull the cover and look at it all more closely. Any strange wear on the belt? Foreign objects on the teeth of the pulleys, etc?

The belt has a few small marks on the outside of it. I am assuming that is from hitting the pulley cover a few times. Other than that there is no rot and it is in really good shape.

Not much help, But my 04 does something similar to what your saying but maybe not as extreme. When backing it up I notice mine to try to walk itself off the rear pulley and it will make a slight chirp if you roll back far enough! Even up on stands it will do it and things seem to get tight when you do so. When you go foward it centers itself right back up. It's done this ever since I got it and have put well over 5,000 miles like this. Around 13,000 on the bike. just figured it to be nature of the beast. Maybe we got a bad reverse gear!! Take care -Arthur-

[confused]mine "clicks" a lil bit sometimes when u roll it back outa the garage, but never noticed it trying to walk off. Mostly posting so I don't miss the outcome of this issue. Good luck let us know what u find.

My 06 ss does squeaks when I back it out of garage all the time. No noises at all when riding. Unless the belt is physically coming off I wouldn't worry about it.
