Hey everyone,

I had my belt snap today. I found the belt at my local "buel" dealer for 180, but as I was stripping down the bike, I noticed my tensioner does not spin perfectly true when spun with a finger. It makes no noise and appears to spin "smooth" but spinning with a finger showed the tensioner to appear at least to ocilate up and down..when I attempt to wiggle it to see if it is loose on the spindle it has leeway but less than 1mm or so. and does not feel like it would be out of tolerance for a bearing based spindle set up.

Does this behavior sound normal? I am just wondering if I should get a tensioner as well as a belt when I make the 45 mile drive to my "local" buell dealer

thanks
Ned

Mine spins easily with a finger as has zero play. 26k miles on my belt and still going...

I got my gates belt for 156$ at www.steelthundercc.com and its a gates belt. All of your "O.E.M. harley dealer belts" are gates belts by the way. Harley just buys them blank and puts there own part number on them. My neibor is a gates rep, and i found out just yesterday that goodyear is buying all there belts from gates now as well, just goes to show they are doing something right :) stay away from dayco belts they are JUNK!!! for an 04 xb12r and many other xb bikes the belt is a 128 tooth spt 91/03 width is 1 1/8" and i can get you the part number off the belt if needed

If I'm correct the early belts were Gates, Goodyear supplies the later ones. It's possible that Goodyear is now buying their belts from Gates and is concentrating only on tires. I was a district manager for Gates in AZ for a while and may be able to confirm this.

im going to put it in the email just like its written on the belt... BDL-PC-128-118Z GATES USA 219W and the the tag that was on it has all the numbers from my earlier post and has a bar code and in real big numbers below the bar code it has the number 77538. one of those numbers should get you where you need to go and save you money from going to HD and its the exact same belt

I just ordered my Gates 77538 rear drive belt for my '05 XB12R from Steel Thunder Custom Cycles. Under $153 shipped. Best belt at the best price. 15K miles, and when I got it there were several significant nicks on the edges. Looking at the service manual, they are the type that are at least on the borderline of being the type that call for replacement. Better safe than sorry - I sure don't want to end up stranded who-knows-where.

These look like they cross reference with yamaha star warrior belts. Im going to stop by the dealer down the road and talk to the parts guy and see what he says and do some comparisons... do we know the pitch and depth on these belts?

Save that money, the H/D number for anyone crossing numbers is G0500.1AAE for the stock Belt on newer 08+ Xbs. $150.bucks isn't too bad since Harley is always willing to charge More!Post up if you get anything else on that.*Jimi

I never post and am tired of searching.

I bought my 04 12s last july, belt blew at 14k, bought a new Good Year one from the dealer for like $180ish, and it just ripped the teeth off again. I now have 19K (5K on new belt) on it, I am in no way easy on it. Am i just riding it to hard or is there something that needs to be addressed? Again, mine are not snapping, i can ride it home, it just ripping like 8-12 teeth off the belt.

you have something that needs to be addressed.10k hard miles on my belt and looks like it could go 10k more.

I figured so, I had tires put on by a shop and with other things they did wrong/messed up I'm thinking he may have something to do with it. Guess I'll inspect everything, maybe buy a new tensioner. Thanks

Good info.
tireburner you need to look at the cush drive in the front sprocket.

I think there is one like the 1125.
sounds like it is a shock load issue
