Best exhaust?

Bought an '07 XB12r last month. Absolutely love the way it rides. But I really want to put a new exhaust on it. Talked to one of the guys at a local dealer about his. It sounded good but he said that he felt like it took away from some of the performance of the bike compared to when it was stock. Was wondering what system gives the best sound but doesn't take way from the performance. Also, is heat wrapping the pipes a good investment? Thanks for any help.

The best is Micron but they are only available in Australia from what I hear now. D&D and Drummer keep most of the power from what people have posted. I have a modified pipe from Hawk and many love it. It sounds great but I did lose bottom and middle. Having said that I have not done any tuning yet and am waiting for some new maps to come out.

Thanks for the help that ASB shootout answered all of my questions. I think i have settled on the Drummer SS, puts out nearly as much power as the Micron and in my opinion looks better.

Love the spec ops pipe on my bike. If anything it gets better performance than stock top middle and bottom. I do have other mods as well though.

This purely a subjective response ,even after you look at the numbers-of course everyone loves THERES the best!;)
I personally like the GB...

I have an 07 XB12R as well with a Micron exhaust and I love it. Some of the other exhausts are really loud and annoying, but the Micron exhaust has a nice low rumble at idle and sounds like a muscle car once you start hitting high rpms. The chrome cannister and shaped dual exhaust also looks the best out of all the exhaust options imo. The above linked exhaust shootout report is very helpful as well. I believe the micron system is one of the only (if not the only) full exhaust system, so changing out your headers is something that needs to be done as well. It's definetely the most expensive system I know of, but after having it on for over 2 years I've had no issues or regrets. There was definitely a power increase, however I also had the race ecm installed at the same time. Good luck, lemme know if you need pics or whatever.

asb's shootout is old and does not include even half of the old slip-on's. but it does give you a general idea. ;)

the best for every person is different.
some like torque over hp and others don't...

i still like my buell race pipe and it does pretty well on a 12, micron beats it out by just a few rpm on the top end
