i have a 03 xb9s i drop it on the left side no big damage just broke of shifter... i bought a new one no **** stuck in 2nd gear so i pulled the primary case off nothing so i pulled the clutch basket and the shift fork was on the opposite side so i put it back together and it shifts to 2nd gear and stops. also the shifter does not go back after a shift i have to move it manually before i can shift up or down [mad][confused]

i remember reading a recall for bikes not shifting wish i knew more. but i probably know a lot less then you good luck.

What do you mean the shift fork was on the other side?

Generally when they stop shifting a shift fork has bent and cannot shift anymore.

it sounds like you have broken or unhooked the return spring ,the spring brings the shift mechanism back to the centre to allow up or down shifts.

Thats only true if it shifts... one way only (usually up) but all the way to top gear.

I bet it's something much simpler…. I bet the shift lever pivot bolt is binding on the lever itself.
the shifter does not go back after a shift i have to move it manually
Try loosening the pivot bolt and see if that works for you[up]

Thanks guys wolfo68 both of the shift forks were past the center stop pin so I undid the springs and moved them back 180 degrees.. I'm going to try and loosen the pivot bolt.. and how do I check the return spring thanks for all the help

you would have had to split the case halves to get to the shift forks...

I'd look at this first before moving into anything else, but before you do, research what it's normal position is before moving any parts.
And while you've got the primary cover off, remove the nut from the crankshaft (forward sprocket, stator housing) clean the threads off both the crank shaft and nut, add red loctite and torque the nut to 240-260 ft. lbs. This was an update in the torque value of the nut by Buell in 2005. Also, check your primary chain for proper adjustment.

I was out riding today when I got stopped by a train. I pulled into an adjacent parking lot to attempt a few clutch wheelies while waiting for the train to pass. Directly after this I had a very difficult time shifting. I couldn't shift up or down without reaching down and jarring my shifter around with my hand.

I really don't know wth was going on, but by the end of the day it was shifting just fine again.

it almost seems like what happened to mine when flipped it. i had to replace my primary cover. every thing was good to go. when i went to shift it wouldnt. took every thing back off, nothing broke or missing. it seems that the shifter shaft was tweeked a bit. so i honed out the brass bushing. not to much. i was able to shift but some times i would have to move it back to center with my toe while shifting. now i dont because the bushing is now worn in. which is what has happend to you while riding about 06buelly.

0feedback if every thing in the primary is fine, i.g. the springs, shift forks, ect., try honing the brass bushing a bit. to make your own hone, get some emery cloth and a bolt that is a smaller dia. that the shift shaft. cut the head off the bolt, then make a cut in the center of the bolt as if you were going to split the bolt in half, but just about half inch down. place cloth in the slit you just make and wrap it around the bolt. place the bolt in a drill and slowly hone the bushing. or just go buy a small brake hone.
