So a buddy's son got in some trouble and I bought his 2007 XB12r. Never owned a buell but have always loved the look, uniqueness and fact that's is AMERICAN!

Here's the deal, it's got 11,590 miles on it, check engine light stays on. He has changed the oil on schedule along with the primary but the kid got it painted (a very poor job) he painted over the rear tail light and his wiring job on a bunch of stick-on LEDs are sketchy at best. The latch system doesn't work for the rear seat, the under tail is loose as a goose, the frame puck on the left is scuffed from it being down (frame/engine is fine) the clutch lever is broken and the front rotor feels warped (pulses pretty good on braking).

Thought I would hit you guys up on advise on where to find cheap replacement parts here and there. eBay of course but hoping that the "community" might have some take-offs. Ill keep posting as I dig into the bike. Just rode it home this evening. He also have me a USB cable to go to computer but no program for the computer. Can this be downloaded? Also, are there PDF manuals for download somewhere?

Thanks in advance and ill be anxious for input. Definitely a good amount of work ahead of me!

As far as parts checking in the for sell section are people parting out bikes or selling parts all the time.

The engine light being on could be any number of things, does the bike run good? You can use this cable
http://www.americansportbike.com/shoponline/ccp0-prodshow/A9317.html
To find the code with this program
http://www.ecmspy.com/

Follow the instructions to download the drivers correctly.

Buells can be huge headaches but the massage it gives the brain later is the best you can get.

Welcome! Doesn't sound like anything that a little TLC can't help bring back to life!

You came to the right place for take-offs etc. There always seems to be someone on here that has parts that others need.

You could also look at the links to the right of which I am one of. These are the site sponsors and tend to be a valuable resource.

There's some manuals at the top of the page but I don't think they have a 2007 model. You could also check www.buellmods.com .

You'll need ECMSpy for tuning. Buellmods for that too.

let us know if we can help!

Lastly...Let's see some pics! Otherwise, we'll all think you ride a pink tri-cycle :p

Take care!

Welcome to the Forum, From the sounds of it all it shouldn't be to big of a problem. If I were you I'd try to remove all the paint from the plastics, and wet sand them then buff them out to see if you can restore them. The plastics on these bikes are made from a mold, so they are a solid color all the way through. Also I'm sure somebody has a stock lever they'd give you. I would if i had one.....

I would just remove the LED's and all the sketchy wiring if I were you, that shoudn't be to difficult. In regards to the latch on the rear seat, does the latch not open or close? maybe its just jammed or something.

Post some pictures of your new bike, and your Jeep!!!

Good news is you can get a brand new in box set of plastics for under $1,000. Well under $1,000, actually. You can get the program(ecmspy) for free from some sites, or from a member. I can send you a disc, but someone else will likely chime in with a way to send it to you electronically(I don't know how to do that). There are other paid programs as well. You should be able to clean up the wiring fairly easily, same with brake parts(maybe a little bit of $$$), and frame pucks are cheap I think. Pick up a used clutch lever, and you're pretty much as good as new as far as I can tell. Here's some places to look for parts:

buellsterparts.com (prices aren't always the best)
ebay
craigslist
lshd1.com (best prices, but have to know part numbers)
surdyke.com (similar to lshd1)
amreicansportbike.com (the BEST customer service you will ever find. Don't be thrown off by their high shipping estimates, they will end up only charging you actual shipping cost).

Welcome and good luck on the repair. NO solicitations from me just a suggestion. Don't use a torque wrench on your drain plugs

If you are in san diego I have the program and cable. I would help with the engine light.

You guys are stellar! I belong to a few other forums for just this reason (thumpertalk being one) and rarely do they disappoint. I'm sure I'm making it out to be worse than it is but regardless its going to be a journey! I haven't had a chance to start mulling through the websites that Loki, 50dro or snrusnak suggested yet but here are a few quick pictures I snapped last night. Sorry for the mess in the garage, my wife and I are about two weeks out from moving to Dallas, TX. Also, if any of you guys are in the DFW area and would accept beer of choice in return for your $0.02 in person once I arrive that would be awesome! I'm a dirtbike/Hare Scramble/Motocrosser at heart but have always had a Buell fascination so I'm a newbie when it comes to the world of american sportbikes but I've been working on motorcycles since I could ride/break them!

since you already have the cable someone here can send you the file. i dont have the installer anymore. the link i used to get it from is down.

those sliders on your bike worry me. they look to be attached with one bolt. if you ever go down its going to rip right out and probably cause more damage than it would prevent. get yourself some proper axle sliders from 5-0 dro and youll be good to go.

I wish I was in SoCal, gotta be some awesome riding there in the hills! Unfortunately, I'm headed to Dallas, TX in about two weeks. Hopefully someone in that area might chime in with the same offer. Like I said above, I'll buy the beer!

Glad to be a part of the "community"!

You beat me to it! Not sure what they were thinking there? [confused] We also have proper engine case sliders that spread the load much better than what was installed on your bike. Those are bound to cause problems. Understand, I'm not ragging on you or your bike...Just an FYI... Looks decent otherwise! [up]

Bike looks nice, and pretty clean. I do think you are making it sound worse than it is :) [up]

I'm in Dallas. Are you actually going to be in Dallas proper or one of the many suburbs?

I'm relatively new to the Buell scene ( I also have an 07 12R) but have owned and worked on tons of bikes. I've been pretty busy reading up on the forums about the common issues and mods so I feel I could be of some help. If nothing else, I know lots of good places to go ride and would be happy to have another Buell join me.

I got a clutch lever you can have. Just cover shipping and its yours. Its stock silver . Send me a pm if you want it.

Welcome and good luck.

ChibbMD,

Thanks for the offer! I'm headed out to to Dallas on Monday to look at a few rentals in the Plano area. I'll be working in Downtown and my wife will be working in Frisco. I'll PM you when I find out where I'll be living. Another set of eyes is always good and I'd for sure be down to go ride. I'll be slow though..... I'm use to the dirt!

Welcome to the board!

It doesn't look all that rough at all. You will find its a addictive brand. Good luck and enjoy!

Yeah, definitely do that. I'm in Dallas proper but all the good riding is to the North and East so I have to pass through Plano on my way to the good roads. Good luck with the move and I'll look to hear from you when you get settled in.

I have a used front rotor off a 12R I was going to have waved but decided not to. Like I said its used but straight, if you find yours truly is warped your welcome to it.
