Buell vs Tree

I would w.o doubt try to buy it back. I bet you could get it back yourself and then have 2 bikes, or spare parts for the new one, or part it out to us and make some $.

Fair enough, although I don't want to count chickens before they hatch. The bike was basically perfect - so it's hard to imagine I have to start the search all over again, because of a damn tree branch! It has 4096 miles on it, and brand new tires with less than 200 miles on them. The rest is fairly stock though.

Tough call. They might total it. I picked up my XB12 bolt back for stupid cheap! If they total it, get your check which I imagine will be close to repair estimate (don't quote me too hard on that!) and if you can buy it back for under a grand...I'd go for it and part it out or try repairing yourself. Don't let that low mile beauty go to a scrap yard though if you can help it!

The bad part about buying it back, and trying to fix is that it'd have a salvage title at that point. A salvage title bike, isn't worth anything to very many people. So I'd basically not have the option to sell it in the future. I've dealt with that on a car, don't really want to deal with that on a bike.

It hurts me knowing that it might go to a scrap yard. I'm definitely going to pull off my $250 RSS though before the insurance grabs it. Sucks that I'm out $300 for the tires and wheel bearings that were just installed right before the tree hit it.

Sucks to hear man, It may not be worth much to many people to have a salvage title, but if it can be repaired by you then you should keep it. Imagine how special that bike will be to you.

IF they total it ive been told (and offered) 30% for buy back of the totaled price.

When I crashed mine, they wanted to total it based mainly on the scratched swingarm. I don't really care about cosmetics and chrome and shinys.

I had the adjuster ask the mechanic if the swingarm was still safe to use. Mechanic said it was. I said don't worry about that.

Insurance was happy and allowed some stuff they wouldn't ordinarily approve.

In my case, it's the frame that will be pushing things over the edge. The insurance adjuster already had the swing arm down, but HD added the frame when they did their inspection while the bike was on the lift. The frame is something like $1300 alone.

I have a feeling it's because they cannot repair scratches in the frame (Since it's powder coat), so they'd have to replace the frame in order to bring the bike back to new. I didn't see any dents in it myself, so I'm 'guessing' it's just the scratches they can't repair.

As with true Geico form, I've got to wait another week before the adjuster can get back to HD to check out the bike again, and see why they added what they did to the quote. What fun! Another week off awesome riding weather in Ohio!

Thanks,

Bike is totaled. [sad]

The buy-back on the bike is $2400, so I don't think I'll be able to buy it back. Way too much compared to what I'm getting back. Sad day for sure. They are still working out some paperwork, because my tires had less than 300-miles on them, and the install and purchase of that an the new wheels bearings was over $300, so I am trying to get some of that back as well, to help out the final number they are giving me.

I'm going to stop by Harley-Davidson tomorrow, and swap out my Pegasus RSS for the stock, and grab my license plate and so forth. Definitely not what I wanted to see happen with the bike. I believe the latest repair quote was $4000, so obviously too high to repair the bike.

That said - anyone with a low mile, clean XB9R for sale, I'm looking. I need to get back on the road riding again before I forget how! I've already been without my bike for a month. I am also looking for an M2 or X1, but not necessarily to replace my XB - I'd like to have both. The M2 or X1 doesn't necessarily have to be running, but it has to be in decent condition at least.

I totaled my 04 12s 16k miles. Damage was bars, clutch and shifter levers, small dent in tank, scratches on all plastics tank and swing arm, seat rail. They gave me 3900 ( which is what I paid for it) buy back was 1900 and 500 deductible , so I let them have it. They were super fast on coming out to look at it (2 days) cut me check 2 days later. Only question they asked me was y I waited 3 months to claim my wreck. Answer was who cares lol, plus I was laid up for 3 months with smashed sternum ,ribs left side, foot and a collarbone in 5 pieces. State farm is my insc. Provider.

But I'm sorry to hear bout yur bike . Hope all goes well and u gets a new pony to ride!

shouldve invested in frame pucks..

Frame pucks would not have done anything. The damage to the frame was because of the tree, not the ground and was no where near where a frame puck would cover.

It was all just bad luck, because it was a damn tree that totaled my bike. Luckily nobody was hurt, so that's the good thing. Just sucks the first time my bike was ever in rain, was the same day it go totaled while it was simply parked in my buddies driveway. Hopefully I get the final number tomorrow, and I can really start searching for the next Buell. I have an X1 in mind, but it's 4.5 hours away, and not sure I want to go that far or not.

weird, cuz from the pics it doesnt look like the visible side of the frame is even touched by the tree.. maybe im blind..

i was more concerned with the side of the frame you cant see, on which it looks like the bike actually fell on.

i have a 2001 X1 as well as my XB9s, the X1 is a badass bike!

Some of the branches were already removed in the pictures, but there is no dents anywhere in the frame, it's all visual. From what HD said the damage on the frame is all just scratches in the powder coat, which cannot be buffed out or painted in anyway where they can get it to match properly (Because it's powder coat). So in order to fix properly, they have to replace the whole frame ($1300 + Labor).

The side that landed on the ground was saved by the handlebar since I had the handlebar locked. Frame never touched the ground. The handlebar was bent, clutch lever was bent, end cap and grip destroyed. All the pegs, shifter, mirror and both turn signals on that side took the hit, but not the frame. I was really surprised to see no dents myself. Frame pucks are definitely a must, and I'll make sure to have a set before buying my next XB, unless it already has them.

I do like the X1's and M2's a lot, and based on the market right now, I'm guessing I'll likely have an M2 or X1 first. Not really any good, reasonably priced XB9's out there. What I really like is the Volcano Gray / Blazing Orange of the 2002 M2. I don't think any other year / bike comes in that color combo from what I've seen. The upgraded orange wheel on that combo looks simply baddass.
