I was changing my back tire today and managed to cross thread the rear axle as I was tightening it. What is my course of action from here? I was thinking find a thread chaser to repair the threads in the swing arm and buy a new axle to replace the cross threaded one. Anyone happen to know the thread pitch of the rear axle? I couldn't find any information on that in my searching.

You might want to try taking the wheel out and putting in the axle, grease on threads pushing as you turn Clock wise, or take a pic of your axle threads for us to see.

It's difficult to tell, I can't get my head in there to see. My plan is to buy a new axle and see if there's a thread chaser available to run in and fix the swing arm. I just can't find any information online about what the size and pitch of the thread is for the swingarm to see if such a thread chaser exists.

I dusted off some calipers and measured it a 1.125" Major diameter with 12 threads per inch. The search is on.

My research suggests that it will be cheaper to buy an axle and swing arm than to buy a thread chaser for this size.

yea for $15 you can start with a axle and go from there.

Usually guys cant get them started ? yours went all the way in but very hard I would be guessing, were the threads dry ? please give details . Doing it by hand ? impact ?

If you are going to take off your swing arm take it in to a tool shop have them chase it why buy a tool to use once. Or take your bike in to the shop in a truck chase it on the bike.

Just bought a new (to me) swingarm and another axle. I'm out $72.91 to fix this lol. Could be worse.

I propped the wheel up on my feet, threaded the axle in by hand (with no lube on threads) 5-6 turns (it felt fine at this point) and then switched to a ratchet. I felt it tightening up when the axle was about 40% in so I just quit before I fubar'd it completely in case the threads could be chased. But taps in this size cost more than just replacing the parts.

good deal !!! I have always found out the hard way if it starts getting hard stop, it will always get worse, Dry threads could have been the problem.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, I'll make an official intro post soon. I've been super busy perusing these forums to fix all the little gremlins on the bike (It was in need of serious rescue). This place has been a great resource so far.

You prob dont notice the threads could have be jacked before and not from you .
