What is a good CAD software? I want to try and mess around with it and make some of my own designs and parts eventually. what does everyone use as well as what is easy to learn on? any links to download the software for free too?

Any software that is worth anything will not be free. If you want to design parts, solidworks is about the best for 3D modeling, assemblies, etc. The downside for you is that solidworks is ridiculously expensive. You can download some cheap 2D programs that are trials and you can't save anything or Google sketch up or something of the like, but that really isn't a cad program.

well i know that the software is expensive but there are ways aroound that and my question is just what is the best to use as well as functionality too. with the internet nothing is impossible to get for "free" :)

Used AutoCAD, Solidworks, and Inventor. My personal fave has been Inventor. It is VERY intuitive, unlike AutoCAD, and is user friendly. Solidworks seemed more for Pros that have years & years under their belts, but you can do some Amazing work with it. Kinda depends on your CAD experience. All just my opinion.

In my opinion, Inventor is better for the rookie. Got awesome tutorials & guides. It's what all our new Engineers start on and we have both AutoCAD & Inventor. Good luck with your search.

Solid works is hands down the best. and its really easy to import into a CAD/CAM like Mastercam.
No dissagreement here, Solidworks is the best. But all depends on experience level. Solidworks is Not the best for someone just starting out, Inventor is. Again, all depends on skill-level. [smirk]
