So my plan was to paint my cam gear cover. but can I just take it off or do I have to look out for anything?

i can see now that it might be a bad idea to take off the cover because of the hydraulic pushrods?? or am i wrong

yea not a good idea. will need to take the rocker boxes off to install them again if the cams come out. but either way you arent really supposed to remove the cam cover while there is force on the cams. is it already off?

not sure what color you want but i like the look of the rustoleum spray on bedliner. thats what i painted mine with.

lvlark: trust me...spend a few minutes, tape it off, and paint it with 426 hemi black wrinkle finish or appropriate paint.....if you have black wrinkle finish. when you remove the cover you are not only removing ignition pickup but run the risk of one or more cams coming out with the cover. if that happens and 99% of the time it will, plan on spending an entire weekend putting it all back together. :D

even if the cams did stay in its still not a good idea because of the force pushing down on them while only being supported on one end. i def agree though, no need to rotate the engine and remove rocker boxes just to paint the cover.

All manuals say it is necessary to relieve pressure on the cams by removing the rocker boxes before removing the cam cover. Translation, rotate engine and mess with a perfectly good engine for cosmetic reasons. Tape, light sand paper. AutoZone prep wipe and your choice of high heat engine paint is the best rout unless you want to buy a gasket kit and waist a weekend... either way I'm sure it will look great, I vote the non-evasive rout.
