Howdy-
Has anyone ever tried to do a dry clutch open primary for the XB12s Thunderstorm?
I've been pulling as much as I can off to make service (oil changes, tire changes, etc) less time consuming...started thinking...damn, if I had an open primary.....may look bad-arse as well.

There never was a "kit" to my knowledge, there were a few one off's made but thats about it.

Looks like free spriits made one at one time, but it required extensive transmission modification to seal the output shaft for fluid fill.

up what he said ^^^ it was about $2,500 and they only did it for a short while. It looked bad ass. Ill try to find a picture of it

...MAN! that just did something my wife couldn't do!!
I ran across a kit from PipeDreamz- says up to 2002 (got 2009 scg, but maybe..) they made an "inner/outer" sealed cover to mount directly where the existing outer primary goes...just don't like the 3" belt...I'm liking the Freespirit...if only I could use a chain....would be NASTY!

2002 would be the last year the sportster style engine was used on the tube frame bikes. In 03 the XB bikes came about and have the new style engine. Completely different.

I knew there were some around, didnt know there was a mass market kit though. I had only seen the free spirits kit.

I suppose the tube buells would be easier since they had the sporster engine.

You might be able to justify the cost & time of doing a dry clutch conversion in terms of weight-savings, or just aesthetics (if you happen to like how an open clutch & primary belt looks), but I don't think you'll ever see your time & money back out of it.

I think you're better off by simply spending 15 min & $15 every 5000 miles to change the primary fluid. JMO...

U right.....mostly the look, but I put over 600 miles a week riding....creates HUGH opportunities for me to maintain- quick replacement of the starter in the future is my thinking (and cool factor).
Keeping this till the day I die...love the ride!!
