Chambered Mufflers...Anything against them?

I want to build a new muffler for my XB9SX...it has a D&D muffler on it now, sounds pretty good but mostly I just want to build a muffler because it gives me something to do. I understand a glass packed straight through pipe flows better, but I always loved that Chambered muffler sound. Is there anything wrong with building a chambered muffler similar to a flowmaster or something? I have never built an actual muffler before, a new experience. I have nice lil TIG setup, my personal favorite weld method and am pretty good at cuttin Sh** up!:D I have some ideas I want to try out. Anything I should be cautious of? Any suggestions?

Good luck!
On a side note, I would be more interested in a chambered muffler to avoid repacking, but I also don't want to sacrifice too much performance. Are there any good chambered systems out there?

I have a stocker that someone chopped into already if you want to use that as a shell for playing with.

nothing wrong with a chambered muffler, you just lose a little power over a straight through.

I was looking into something like this (basically a generic flowmaster). I'd get it just to cut into it and see how it's constructed. They are around $30. The body would have to be about 2" narrower to fit under the bike. In theory, I would make a merge going into the stock header which would act something like a cross over. Then put tips on it. It's gotta breath better than stock and can't be any worse than the d&d (which has awful low end with the race map)...I really would like to gain some low end and I am not as concerned with overall hp gains on the top. Any of this sound reasonable? Haha It's worth a shot

Just FYI the whole saying about "you need some back pressure for low end torque" is BS it's not true.

You could maybe make sort of a free flowing/chambered muffler....I just had a cool idea pop into my head, I'll sketch it and send it to you later...

Spend a little more $$ and get a magnaflow 11148 muffler. It's 7” wide and will fit under the bike without cutting it up. I know it's not chambered, but it will sound a lot better and more mellow than a d&d pipe.

You can buy a cheap SS straight through muffler for like $50 or less, so not much point in making a muffler unless you really just want to do it.

I agree with d adams, I wouldn't put a chambered muffler on anything I ride or drive, it takes away power, and I prefer the sound of straight through.

That said, to each his own.

I'm aware of the back pressure theory. I made mention of it and was quickly corrected. Haha I'm not set on any particular muffler, but I want to do something a lil different...honestly it's mostly out of curiosity. Hell, some of y'all experienced folk might actually approve of it. :D

I'm all for doing something different(I do own and ride a Buell, after all...) and even if it isn't the best or most cost effective, it's nice just to screw around and have a project.

I'm going to modify my stock muffler shortly, hopefully within a month or two. I see a lot of people do stuff like this themselves, I plan on doing something really simple and cheap, and it should perform about as good as possible.

Know of any mufflers like that but which doesn't point the exhaust right at the tire? And what elbow should be used to pipe it in?

You would have to fab the elbow going into the header. As for the exhast pointed at the tire, you can elbow it out or down. I've seen some pics of d-adams's work. He has fabbed new end caps for the muffler on some projects. If you are handy with a grinder and a proficient welder. It's not too hard.
