Race Buell Improvement Thread

OK, so theoretically you could backdate the charging system to the 07-earlier setup if you use the matching stator. It's just a race bike, so.... why not?

I'm considering knocking 3 of the 6 magnets out of one of my 4 bolt rotors (after getting it drilled to 8) and sourcing one of the lightweight "Magnesium Mike special" 34t sprockets.

BTW, the XR1200 came with the 34t sprocket. I assumed the XB12 and the XR1200 would both share the 38t, but it looks like the XR got the 34t from the factory. I found that out AFTER I bought a new 34t. Also, BTW... it appears HD is still making that 34t rotor/sprocket as of Dec 26, 2023 according to the date sticker on the box.

Any platform that's legal right now is going to require getting into the motor to have a fighting chance, raising the cost of entry significantly.

CoOter keeps telling me to keep modding my bike, and not to waste money on coaching, training, etc. I told him, I'd be more comfortable with spending my motorcycle mod money on YCRS, but he says I'm dumb, noting how is a Yamaha riding school going to help you on a Buell? I feel triggered.

So, I have an Evol Industries aluminum 38T primary front sprocket with an 8 bolt rotor that happens to be missing some magnets, lovingly setup by Magic Mike to go in the bike at some point.

I like coaching, but it has to be the kind of coaching that works for you. I've only been with one school, YCRS looks like it could be a good use of my time to try too. And yeah, Yamaha, but you'll be racing AGAINST them so it's like being a spy in the enemy's camp, learn their secrets so you can exploit them later, right?

You suck.
:sorrow:

Used OEM reg/rect on the way from eBay. For the price, I'm willing to give it a go. Two used OEM units on eBay, and about 200 of the Chinese clone for just under twice the cost of that used unit. Double that cost and I can get MOSFET unit that will require new connectors to be installed, and if I buy locally instead of from Twin Cycles I get to make my own adapter bracket as well. Couldn't find a NOS OEM unit anywhere.

"New" Reg / Rect has me at 14.34v at idle with a slightly discharged batt, 14.43v at revs, charging system is back and my neutral light has never been brighter. I suspect I lost the charging system VERY early on given how bright it is now. I'm still going to replace that switch as the resistance is crap at times.

Meanwhile I've had a couple former race machines pointed out to me that have the numbers to do the job but... they're all expecting 110 octane fuel, MotoA only allows 97 octane T4, those bikes would require diving back into the motor to redo for that fuel, not sure how much pep they'd loose in the process?

Started putting the Uly back to street mode. Short a few bits that I mangled in my 'ooopsie' when I first tracked it... Fishing out the MotoAmerica required tank foam SUCKS.

My headlights had a half bodged LED bulb conversion, including tossing the OEM connector to the harness for butt crimps. If I'm going to be cleaning this up, I'm kinda thinking go with the Lightning LEDs conversion assembly? Is it that much better than OEM with good bulbs, or stick with what's known?

I have a set of Delphi Weatherpack style connectors I was contemplating using, I don't think i have the right crimper for the OEM style it shipped with?

Quite a bit, they require the 110 because of both super aggressive timing curve and a massive amount of compression. You'd at least be in it a set of pistons and timing re-map to survive with the 97. Hard to say what the HP penalty would be.

or stick with what's known?
Buellers like these a lothttps://www.amazon.com/KUQIQI-headlight-Motorcycle-Projector-Headlights/dp/B083PZ5GFN/ref=asc_df_B083PZ5GFN/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=693627432361&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=12632587772302209229&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9031012&hvtargid=pla-907155609313&psc=1&mcid=94bc50b10dfc309792e7d6372c9fbb5d
and it seems these are identical for cheap enough its worth a shot:

I don't think the biggest weatherpak will support that amp load? The ones in my kit won't:( But lots of options for high amp specific connectors.

6000k color temp is a bit blue for my tastes, that high beam also seems pretty hyper focused to one spot? I think I’ll just put some good H7 bulbs in the stocker and remind myself that the goal is to make it inspectable / safe first, nice later if I am going to hang onto it.

I have the Amazon version. It’s not perfect but better than the original setup.

I can't find any full wiring diagrams for them, are they dual element like the Buell OEM heated grips, aka suitable for running off the OEM switch and harness?

Let me translate this for you.....

Where did ya get the sliders? Since CoOter has been CoOter-splaining a lot of track riding education to me, and its starting to stick, I may need them. I still haven't mastered the whole highside/low side thing like he has. :black_eyed::eagerness:
