I was swapping headers today, my original headers came off somewhat easy. didn't turn the engine or remove the frame, ect. but putting the new one one had to pull the engine mount bolts out*for some reason the other headers were a bit bigger* and now the right side engine mount holes won't line up. Any help on getting this taken care of?

Thanks

yeah but the ones I got are the same year just for some reason the rear headers is slightly bigger. got it on and now I can't get the right engine mount bolts in...

Hmmm. What have you tried so far? Can you see where the interference is?

It's not entirely clear in your question, but were you able to remove the original header without removing the engine mounting bolts?

what kind of stand is it on....if just the kick stand lean the bike toward you should line up

@ poinographer
Well, tried disconnecting the rear shock to see if that was somewhat interfering and nothing changed, the holes were still offset about 1/4 to and 1/8 if I'd pick up the rear end.
Probably should have done this with a little more knowledge, no manual or anything kinda just started taking it apart. We were able to remove the original headers without removing the engine mounting bolts.

It's on a rear stand.

If I don't get it figured out by tomorrow morning will post some pictures of the mess I made :p

My guess is you need to lift the motor some? If yes, just a jack under the motor to line it back up. What headers did you buy or where did they come from? Were they used and possibly bent a little? Is the pipe hitting the frame anywhere?

Just had the same issue with my bike. It's all about how you jack the engine, had to do it four different times.

Maybe try to avoid direct contact between the jack and engine, a single high pressure point could crack or puncture. Add some cushion like towels if it's a regular floor jack.

Did you tighten the left side engine mounting bolts and then discover the right side does not line up? If so, then maybe if you loosen the left side you can shift things around (using a jack, or a block of wood and a long pry bar) enough to get the ride side lined up; then tighten both sides only a bit at a time.

Another idea, try putting the right side in first and see if the left side line-up is equally bad. One side may require less of a fight than the other.

Well, finally got it back together, yay me. ha. Had such a had time with that right side for some reason. Think I may just buy that manual so I don't have an issue like this in the future.
Ended up having to jack it up and bar it over. Pain in the rear but got it. Thanks for all the help!

What steps did you take in order to be able to remove the header without rotating the engine? I need to do a water pump repair soon and have been reluctant to do it since I have never rotated the engine before. Thanks for any instructions you can offer. Mort
