Okay so I modified my intake setup on my '03 XB9R by using 2 90 degree 2" rubber hoses and some PVC. I now have direct air flow slamming into the throttle body by the oil cooler. I cant run it right now because I don't have a filter.

QUESTION

Does anyone have info on a small cone filter (2" OD) that I can place on this bad boy? also, I need breather filters.

Will I run into any problems with idling? A/F? It should level itself out correct?

It costed me about $34, and that was for 10 ft of PVC included.

Pics coming soon.

I believe you can buy both of those filters at a local parts store. You can around me atleast. I would love some pictures! But it would be best after any air filter mod to do some tuning and also a tps reset so it relearns everything

That's what I thought. I found a thread for a catch can install. This has been an eventful weekend. Ill post soon and update on the reset

I would go back to stock for the intake, cai's are such a gimmick.

Think if you were trying to suck something up with a straw which one will be easier a longer or a shorter straw? A little cold air isnt going to do anything for your bike.

While I agree more or less with oh9bolt I do think it's great you're going for it. Good luck and please post those pix when completed.

oh9bolt - I do agree that CAIs are an absolute gimmick, in most instances. From what I see on my stock setup, theres a lot of indirect airflow, with a lot of contamination in that airflow. I did the oil breather reroute with a catch can (still have to get the actual catch can from my job), and simply directed all airflow into the throttle body. I don't care too much about the cold air, I just want clean air with excellent volume.

I have 2 pics currently, and nothing is completely finished. The Bike is dirty as hell and just mocked up so please don't judge! this costed me a total of $70 for the catch can setup and intake. Still need a cone filter with a 2" diameter and 40-45 degree angle.

Running the bike around with a make shift filter and this crankcase breather reroute was an absolute joy. I cannot believe how smooth it runs, how much power has been reclaimed. No burps, no high idles, smooth running, and definitely more of my HP for a longer curve of the RPMs. When I get the filter, it'll look even better

I suck at posting pics..Pics coming tomorrow

Fun idea but it will provide MUCH more restriction than the stock setup. If anything, do the "open airbox" conversion which has a different air filter top. The factory air box can flow lots of air and is as clean as you can get with a good filter.

I'm surprised it will restrict much more. Luckily I didn't modify anything else on it. I'll save my money and go back to stock then

Bike isn't tuned for that intake so it is probably going to run lean. I have a buddy who set up & tuned his for CIA. Biggest thing you can do is run XB12 intake & exhaust . Puts out much more than most other mods.

My bike was running super rich before this. Now it seems to run perfect. Obviously an issue when remapping. I'll probably run lean afterwards.

To clear the air I'm not looking for a significant HP gain. I just want the smoother ride, response and fuel mileage. I've gained almost all of that at this point, but I want to make sure it won't blow up for some crazy reason.

Fun experiment!

Back in the good old days, air boxes were just a device to help meet EPA sound emission requirements, but today they are volumetrically-tuned chambers that 'resonate' with the engine's intake cycles, much like an acoustic guitar body. Randomly cutting it up & sticking tubes into it has about as much chance of making the bike run better as doing the same to a guitar has of making it sound better.
