5 degrees is my coldest , 45 minute ride . Yet that was almost 20 years ago , now it must be above freezing , I have heated gear , so temp does not matter as much now .
Last thanksgiving my friend and I did a night ride back to our hometown. 150 miles, low temp was 29 degrees. We got there around 12:30am. It was one of my most memorable trips and I'd do it again.
Coldest for me was back in January of this year - Was sunny, but only 8 degrees f out. Was out for a hour, with a break in the middle to warm up at Starbucks. Needed help to get my helmet off since my fingers were frozen.
20 degrees.. for only about 13 miles each way between home and work. Only felt it on my hands really. Drafted box trucks at time to get out of the wind. Not the brightest thing I have ever done.
seems like most of us have ventured forth on our bikes when the mercury plummets.
With proper gear and a hearty set of cajones even the most delicate of us endeavour to ride.
My reason for not riding year round (aside from snow) is the road surface itself suffers from the cold as well.
Those corners that are in the sun when it's high (and the days are long) now tend to harbour shadows all day long and don't get the chance to thaw out, different road surfaces react differently to the cold and depending where you are, your elevation can come into play.
When I lived on Vancouver Island it was the leaves in the fall that liked to hide in the apex's of corners and that lead to riding in the rain pretty much for the duration of the winter.
Spring brings with it the massive accumulation of sand and the thoughtless driving practices of cagers far and wide.
The coldest I've been was the Children's Hospital Toy Run the year before last. It started out around 15 degrees, I rode like 25 or 30 miles down there, then stood around in the cold selling pins for a few hours, then finally went on the run and rode home. I went in my car this year. Good thing I did, because they turned away all the bikes that came and told them that if they went on the run, the Aurora PD would write them a ticket. Not sure what they could write them up for, but whatever. I would have been beyond pissed. I saw a guy on a firebolt get turned away. I've been watching for angry posts on the forum, but he must not be a member cus I didn't see one.
I will be at the toy run no matter what the weather is though, even if I am in a car. The hospital saved the lives of 2 of my best friends. One was diagnosed with cancer at age 13 and the other has cystic fibrosis. So I'm more than happy to help out. Plus, my company makes the pins and I have to go sell them at the event
I don't know the exact temp but this past winter I rode a suzuki boulevard or what ever it was about 20 so mile at night. My brother just bought it and never rode a bike on the interstate so I got volunteered. The only positive about it was if you go to WOT it would stick for about 10 seconds and I could grab the exhaust to warm my hands back up. But I'd do it if I had better gloves
Oh i totally forgot about last year when the car dealership i work for traded for 2 different harleys a few weeks after thanksgiving. I went and picked them up @ the customers houses and rode them to the dealer ship. One Nite Rod Special about 3 miles 15degrees(not to bad). And a Softail springer it was 30-32 and freezing drizzle went about 6 blocks and that was actually kinda fun it was super easy to lite the back tire up in every gear.
my wifes car wouldnt start today (fuel pump) so i let her take the truck, i took the buell. it was about 25 degrees when i left. i wore a 1 piece overall and a jacket with some heavy winter gloves. only part that was cold was my neck lol. i dont ride in the winter unless i have to, they use a ton of cinders in PA
