Communication devices

Does anyone use communication devices in their helmet? Are there any that work well with our louder exhausts?

Are there any iPhone apps that might work?

there a couple of helmets that have built in Bluetooth and am/fm radios...I know one is made by oniel...you can also have helmet to helmet communication with them

I'm interested in hearing more info on this as well. I would love to be able to let your riding buddys know important info onece in a while!! I know it would have saved my ass from a ticket a while back if my buddy could have told me about the cop that he saw that I didnt.

i have the Blue ant interphones been using them a couple years there decant and plenty loud to cover the exhaust the bad is the other person hears it...
most are blue tooth and the iphone will sunc with it for as cheap as they were (about 150 for the pair)they work great .
When i have more $$ to blow likely upgrade to a scala g4 set

I was looking at the Starcom a while back. As someone with a hearing loss, I thought it would work to my favor, as the demo sounds clear. Jacks for your phone, mp3 and passenger.

I haven't found someone that has one yet to see if its worth the price and having to find some place on the bike to put it.

It's interesting to me that there are quite a few different options listed here. Usually on something like this there are always varying opinions, but there always seems to be one product that seems to stick out or get more 'votes' for a lack of better terms.

The challenge with these things is there's no store close by with several different options to try out side by side and the price points can be $150 high and low depending on the device.

I just bought a Sena SMH10 here as well. Read tons of positive reviews on it and they also come with a replacement base so you can use ear buds (noise canceling) with it.

I had one of the cheapo units, had issues with connectivity, and the antenna came loose on one if them.
After reading many reviews I went with the Sena unit as well. Webbikeworld is always a great resource for in depth reviews. The have a great write up on it. The selling point for me was the optional base with a ear bud jack. Having a loud pipe, and with wind noise, listening to speakers on top of that is just asking for quick hearing loss. With my etomyte er6's i get a little noise canceling and don't have to crank the volume.

The Sena pairs with both my droid x, and my garmin 660 flawlessly. The best is I can connect the phone to the garmin, then the garmin to the Sena. Then they all work together. Its a great setup.

While I have no experience, I hear the scala g4 is a great unit as well.

But I am very satisfied with the Sena unit.

i also have the sena smh10 and love it. have a d&d exhaust on my bike and can still hear callers/music while riding just fine. people on the other end said that they cant even tell im on my bike. works really well at city speeds but for highway speeds it can get a little annoying. if the mic gets wind noise it will think that you are trying to talk on on the intercom and keep interrupting the music. my shoei came with a chin wind guard that helps with this quite a bit. will be a little hot in the summer but oh well. other than that i have had no problems syncing it to my iphone 4. its really easy to use all of the controls on it as well. i would buy another if i needed to. buy.com had a deal on them as well(pair for 250)

Don't have it quite yet. I ordered from RocketMoto (very good customer service) and they informed me that the units are on back order due to a new one with a USB port being released. The new ones can now be updated by the user. Same unit, just a new feature.

Did you buy these also?

I did buy these as well, but they're with my above order. Will update this post with a pic of them when I get them which will hopefully be sometime next week.

I have the scala rider g4 and I have nothing but good things to say about it. I can pair it to my iPhone and my girl can pair hers' to her iPhone and we can listen to our own music at the same time and still communicate. I have been at 80mph and on the phone with no noise issues. I previously owned the scala rider q2 and liked it as well.

I thought I had another pic with the unit on the base. But here is mine mounted to my Shoei Qwest. I had to use the double stick tape mounting option rather then the clamp because of how tight the liner is around the base of my helmet.
I can also vouch for the sound quality. I can ride with my lid open, and my barker pipe and the person on the other end is non the wiser. Why cant they put this tech into traditional bluetooth headsets!

Of the higher end units sena, scala, ect it really comes down to details.
Their quality is comparable, as I said I liked to optional bases(which the G4 may offer now as well), and the ease of use. The large multi function wheel is very nice. Its better IMO then others where you have to fumble around with different buttons.

@ Jornum1, you can only listen to music with the ear buds correct? Or does everything work thru them?
I have the same buds and they are sweet, just a little more work to get them in and then wired up.

no not at all. You have full functionality. The base just has a plug instead of the two speakers running out of it. It retains the same boom mic.
The pic above is the included base with two wired in speakers and a boom mic. You can see the mic on the left going up front, and two wires going out the back to the speakers. The ear bud base just replaces those two wires with a headphone jack.
So with my phone connected to the gps, and the gps connected to the sena I can listen to music, hear navigation, talk on the phone, and use the unit to unit intercom.
The ear buds are a million times better, but you sacrifice some convenience with the cord. I just tuck it into my jacket, its not that big of a deal.
