I note on my new 08 12Ss that the cooling fan runs for about 5 minutes after I stop the engine.
Normal from what I hear especially as I live in the tropics.

The other night I shut the bike down via the key, the fan came on as usual, then turned the key straight back on to check the odo.
when I turned it off again the fan did not come on.
Odd I thought, maybe in the 10 seconds I had the bikes electrics turned on the engine cooled enough not to need the fan.

Today I tried the same thing.
The bike has been for a good run and was nice and hot.
I turned the bike off with the key, the fan came on, turned the electrics back on and straight off again.
Sure enough the fan did not start this time.
Seems as though I can overide the cooling fan if I turn the engine off with the key, then turn the power on then off again immediately.

Any body else found this?
No mention in the book.
I can only assume its so you can shut the fan down in a situation where you dont want it to run for the noise???

Answer found on another site

If the key is turned on as you did and with the kill switch set to run, the ignition system and fuel pump are activated and that tells the fan to operate using the engine-running temperature parameters. With the ignition off when you stop the engine the fan operates on different (cooler) temperature parameters. Presumably this is because once the engine has stopped after a run, latent heat from the engine mass rises to the cylinder heads so the fan is set to keep running until a cooler reading is sent from the sensor in the rear head. Best to allow the fan to run as Erik provided for.

The above statement is stolen Direct from Member GrahamNZ on the Buelliton board and I do not accept any credit for it whatso ever!

The fan runs and is there for a reason. Not something to be messed with by turning keys back and forth, let it do its job.

Just so you're clear, I don't turn my key back on to kill the fan. It's just something I discovered accidentally on my bike then checked to see if the wifeys did the same. I like the fan running when I shut it off, If someone asks about it I tell them it a like a leaf blower keeping my parking spot clear:D

Since we are on the subject of fans. I am the new proud owner of a XB12sTT. The fan is the only thing I don't like about it. It seems a bit of a let down when the bike is so well designed and crafted to have the fan noise taint such a great bike. Has anyone found a more quieter fan? I'm on the hunt for one. I haven't yet taken it apart to find out the specs for it. Or is the fact that I live Downunder in New Zealand and the fan circles in the opposite direction?

Never seen a quieter fan out there as of yet. One thing you can add is a right side air scoop to cool the back cylinder a little better then the dan wont run as often.

maybe you can find fans at a computer store...

gamers/tuners place all kinds of quiet fans in their system...but i don't know if they can stand the outside weather [confused]
