New to this board and Buells, recently purchased a 2005 xb12s and am loving it so far. Yesterday, though, a problem arose. I started the bike and got an engine light that didn't go away. I jumped the diagnostic port and got a code 36 which is the cooling fan. First things first I checked my fuses... and it was blown. Great! So I replace the fuse and go for a ride, no engine light. I stop and turn the bike off and no fan, turn the ignition switch on and I have an engine light and a blown fuse again. What could be causing the fuse to blow? The fan doesn't appear to be jammed, it spins fairly freely from what I can tell. What do I need to check? Thanks for any help you guys give me.

Unplug the fan, and see if you're still blowing fuses. If not, replace the fan. If you still blow fuses with the fan unplugged, you have a short to ground somewhere in the main harness. If you don't know how to diagnose a short to ground, then do yourself a favor and take it to a good mechanic that does.

I've done quite a bit of research on the subject now and think I have a good handle on it. I'm pretty sure that the fan is dead, was fluctuating speed before it stopped working. I'll be able to test for shorts tomorrow when I get my multimeter back.

evil nailed it. you can also live jump the fan when it's unplugged and see how it performs. if it is erratic, slow to spool up, you found the problem.

Ive been around flaya :D

2 kids doesnt leave much time for anything else. I try to pop in from time to time though.

Have you found your issue yet? I'm having the same problem and not riding until its fixed.
