after i had a close call on a corner in the dark, i decided that the standard headlights did not provide enough ambient light on the sides of the bike.

so i started by getting the following from my local electrical supply shop.

2x interior home lights (cool looking stule)
2x 12v 50w halogen lights
2x 15amp fused relays
6 meters of 380 degrees centigrade resistant wire
2x water proof switches (for individual light control)
2x steal hose clips (big enough to fit around fork)
2x rubber bungs (to protect your fork from being scratched)
1x tube of gasket engine silicon (heat resistant and water proof)

Total cost $80NZD

i started by drilling a hole in the hose clips and filing it to the size of the threaded light stem, then attached them to the forks and ran the thermal resistant wires from the front of the bike to the battery.

I then connected the relay and to the battery (+) and the switch wire to the tail light. i connected the (+) wires to the lights and the (-) to the engine mount (same place the headlights ground connection is)

i then got the light fitting and applied a generous amount of the gasket silicon to the wires and and the mount that the halogen light connects to and screwed it back together, i then applied some silicon to the halogen light around the terminals and then plugged it in to the light mount. applying the silicon will make the connections waterproof.

i used solder and soldering iron to join all the wires but a silicon wire clasp would have been ideal.

an that is it, all done.

here is the diagram i used.

i will take some more pics tonight and post the difference the 2 halogen lights plus the headlights make.

I like you idea, you could also make the shafts shorter and they would be stealth as

That's great, I have a Uly and in the dark it is a bit hairy round the lanes, hard to see the edge of the road.

I may have to have a go at this.

I've always wanted the same for my bike, alot of deer around here!
The stock lights on my 05 12r are barley adequet for those nighttime corners!
Thanks for the info![up]

Pockets: So you have independent switches for the halogens?

yeah i have individual switches for each light. and if i forget to turn them off they turn off when i turn the bike off as the relay wire is connected to the tail light.

they were not waterproof to begin with but they are water proof now.

as i said in my write up...

I then got the light fitting and applied a generous amount of the gasket silicon to the wires and and the mount that the halogen light connects to and screwed it back together, i then applied some silicon to the halogen light around the terminals and then plugged it in to the light mount. applying the silicon will make the connections waterproof.

great idea [up]
but in my humble opinion they look rather Mickey Mouse, meaning they look like something purchased at Wal Mart and stuck on....
please do not take offence to my comment as we all appreciate function over form and I am sure your idea will evolve into something really sharp looking providing some great inspiration for others..

+1 for thinking outside the box [up]

I also wondered if your running the white wire mod so that both headlights are on all the time?

:)

Hi Pockets

yes the halogen bulbs have a glass lens on the front of them.

Hi BuddhaBuell

thanks. yeah they are purchased from a general lighting store, and only cost me $8 each...

no i am not running the white wire mod yet, will look at doing that later.

to make it even cheaper i have modified my original diagram.

so now you will only need 1x Relay. the relay i got has a 15amp fuse in it and the 2x 12v 50w halogens are only 4.2amps each, total 8.4 amps for both of them so 1 relay will be able to handle them with ease.

ok after finishing off i have found that the 15amp fuses are not good enough so have replaced them with 2x 30amp fuses.

here are some more pics.

will see if i can borrow a mates bike cam and video a night ride down some twisties with the side lights off and then do it again with the side lights on...

these lights make a huge difference. i have no idea how i rode without them...

Have ridden my bike in to work every day and for club rides on my local Crusie Wednesday and Thursday night rides since i completed them on the 24th Feb.

I has rained 2 days out of the last 10 days and they are still running, fuse hasn't blown so the rain hasn't shorted them out... guess my waterproofing must have worked.

Here are some pic i just took 5 mins ago from my bike park outside my work.

I sanded them down last night and spray painted them with 2 coats of 'Black Hammered Metal' colored spay paint...

I have put the switches in the gap under my seat.

Those came out pretty good! Personally, I'd shorten up the mounts, but overall great job![up]
