Well, it's come to realization that it's time to move on from California. Too damn expensive to afford paying rent at the current rate, much less buying a home here. Fuel cost don't help either at $4.33 a gallon:( The company I work for aren't paying nearly enough to survive on after paying obligations. Mind, I don't live beyond my means.
So, I ask what's the cost of living where you live and the going rate for aircraft mechanics in your area?

Dude it gets cold but look at Fargo ND or ND in general economy is awesome here. My wife and I moved from Fargo to Phoenix and realized how easy we had out and came back within 6 months. Gas is at 3.89 right now we pay 560 for our 2bed 1 bath with a 2 stall garage i can leave my car unlocked and not worry.

I pay $400 a month rent for a 3 bedroom house, $250 for all utilities, 93 gas for the bike is under $4 a gal, and insurance on 1 vehicle and 3 motorcycles full coverage is $100 a month.

stensg...ND, dunno...cold weather and I don't do well together, it'll be like culture shock somewhat, I'm from the U.S. Virgin Islands:D

buellxb9rs...Tennessee could work, as long as the job pays well enough to support a family of 5, but I guess anything would work better than SoCal.

You can buy a house in FL dirt cheap due to the economy. I bought a house here roughly 2 years ago and my mortgage is less than most people's rent, and it's a pretty nice house. 3 bedroom 2 bath ~1350 sf with 2 car garage on 1/4 acre. Cost of living here isn't high IMO. A house at the end of my street sold earlier this year for under $11,000, same exact house, similar condition, etc. The bank sold it for what was owed on the mortgage due to foreclosure. Mine was also a foreclosure.

There is a chance I'll be moving to TN though, which is fine by me...

I'm not happy being back in Kalifornikistan either, and I'm itchin' to get back to Seattle... Not much cheaper cost of living per se, but rents are a bit cheaper (WAY cheaper if you can tolerate Tacoma or anywhere 20 miles from the city... LOL!!), people are better, and I grew accustomed to the green/moisture...

Some things are worth more than what the cost of living is...

In a word: lower. The People's Republic of California is going broke anyway; bail before the housing market tanks.

I grew up in California (central valley). I am now in Houston, TX working as a data analyst. Nice weather most of the year, minus a few hot months mid summer. We have Houston International airport and Hobby airport for job opportunities in your field. I am about 20 min from the airport and pay $1225 for a 2000sq ft house with 2 car garage and back yard. Utilities are around $120 a month, and gas is $3.71 for premium.

Dude, move to Afghanistan. I was just there in '03 and I have to say, it was incredible. The economy can only go up, the country sits on an ocean of oil so gas will be cheap one day, and the rent is next to nothing. But the main attraction, is that the terrorist in chief can't strip away your rights or welfare you into submission over there. There's also plenty of places to ride your Buell if you don't mind be IED'ed or sniped by the local scumbags.

I have spent a good portion of my military career in the middle east that spans from Desert Storm to OIF/OEF, been there, done that, and got lots of t-shirts:D:D:D
