Hello all, I just bought my xb9r with 20k miles and after warming up the bike, when I rev the throttle there is a "delay" from idle to 1.5k rpm. I am not sure if it is normal, but this (for lack of a better word) "delay" just so happened to start at the same time my idle is weird also. To explain, since I bought the bike the idle has always been under 1000 rpm but now sometimes it sits at 1.5k rpm as random times then eventually finds it way back to normal idle. Again, I have no mechanical/ electrical experience with motorcycles and would appreciate some help. Thanks - Vince

"Delay" and no further explanation makes it difficult to help you. But i suspect what you are experiencing is the slight "hiccup" a pop miss whatever then the engine revs past it. This is normal

The idle issue could be a number of things, fauly idle air control, throttle
Position out of wack, inproperly adjusted idle, throttle body seals leaking, throttle blade shaft worn....ect

Xb9r- 2003? Guessing you probably have intake seal leaking, or TPS needs a reset and adjust.

Correct, an 03. Would I be able to do that on my own with such little mechanical experience? Or would I need to go to a mechanic? If so, can I go to a Harley Davidson dealership and ask them to tune it up? Thanks - Vince

If you arent confident or experienced with tools, id suggest a Mechanic. Hard to find someone familiar with Buells these days. But the other side, you now own a Buell, learning to wrench and tinker will go a long way. If i wasnt capabale of repairing the bike, the service bills would have added up to the value of the bike by now easily if not more.

What bikes do you have prior experience with? An I-4 will give you Instananious throttle response, to the point of excess in some cases. A single throw crank V-twin w/ enormous flywheel, not so much...

I have no experience in motorcycle mechanics, I only have messed around with my 97 mazda b2300 pick up aha. How did you guys get the experience with tinkering with your buells?

Owning a Buell kind of forces you into the mechanic position. Luckily I had experience having to work on bikes after owning an Italian bike. I still believe the Italians invented the electrical problem to this day because of it.

I find that learning to work on the Buell has brought me closer to it and has helped forge our relationship. I will say, once you dive into it, these bikes are nowhere near as complicated as I expected and its been an amazingly fun learning experience. These forums have taught me a ton and I am forever grateful for the knowledge shared here.

Try owning, restoring, and riding vintage all at the same time. You will be forced to become a mechanic. The Buell...it reminds me of working on my Torker BMX bike. Easy, well thought out, and did I mention user friendly?
