DIY primary gearing swap (step by step with pics)

Just back from the test ride. I really like the way it goes now. You have to change gears quicker than before the swap, as the engine reaches upper registers much faster. The engine sounds great, because most of the time it is kept between 3000 and 4000 rpm. Crusing on 1 or 2 gear at low speed is much smoother, as the rpms are well above the lag.

Yes it does. But during the first ride I tried not to open the throttle to the maximum, just in case if someething went wrong, due to some error I could have made. Since that initial ride I haven't been riding, because I'm on a business trip. I'm coming back tomorrow and certainly I'll take it for another ride.

well done.
Hi,Aartur
I just need replace the primary chain which is too long.
may i just disassembly the engine sprocket?
it seemed difficult to disassembly clutch hub.

Good question! can you just take off the sprocket instead of taking off the clutch basket? It seems plausible since the pressure is off the chain.

Also all you need is the xb9 chain and sprocket correct?

Ok, so I did this mod and wanted to give some feedback. Yes the purpose of this mod is to get better acceleration and low speed handling control. My 0-60 is incredible. Its just flat out runs. However now that I am running at a higher rpm I kept trying to shift into that imaginary 6th gear!

Before I would run it 1 through 3 pretty hard, be up to cruisin speed, then skip 4 and run at 5. Now I run it up through all 5 gears but only faster!

If you do alot of highway cruisin or like highspeed runs I would not recommend this mod. But I like to cruise back roads and city drivin and I enjoy the acceleration more.

As far as the actual project itself on my 2009 XB12R firebolt I needed a 30mm socket to take the clutch basket off. I used an axle 30mm loaner tool from Autozone, and it is left handed threads. Don't forget to use locktite on every fastener to prevent them from shaking loose. I also reused my old gaskets as the bike is pretty new and they haven't leaked yet. My alternator and sprocket came as one assembly so it was a bolt on-bolt off affair.

hello guys!
sorry for my late response. I wasn't checking the forum for a while.
Xuebao, I guess you got your answer already.
you won't be able to remove just the sprocket. the clearance even after loosening the chain is just not big enough to remove it. you have to remove both clutch assembly and the sprocket together.

artur

You gain Low/Mid speed Acceleration but sacrifice some off the Top speed. (Like changing gear ratios in a car trans.)
